I helped my son install a Pioneer DEH-12 radio into a 1989 cutlas cierra. The rear speakers would not come on. There was quite a bit of wire splicing going under the dash. Thought it might be a bad splice. But i used a ohm meter to identify all the wiring.
After scratching my head for some time i figured one last try to verify my wiring was right. I unplugged the front speakers and plugged the rear speakers connectors into the front connectors on the radio wiring harness. The rear speakers worked when wired to the front wires on the radio.
With that being said can anyone tell me how to check the radio to see why the rear output is not there. I have alreqdy checked the fader/balance controls.

Yes I checked the fade control when I had all four speakers plugged up. All I could get was sound from tjhe front. WhenI plugged the rear speakers into the front position i got sound from the rear speakers. That tells me at least it is not a short in the rear speakers.
Is it possible for something inside the radio to mess up that would cause no sound for the rear channel?
it is very possible that the deck could be defective. if you do not care about the ability to fade then u could just tie both front and back speakers together to avoid the issue.
Does that deck have a front image inhancer? (FEI) If that is on it will only play low fequencies through the rears, making it seam like they are off to a lot of people.

Since the back speakers handle so much more power than the dash speakers can the front be damaged by connecting them up together. Especialy if it is turned up really loud to ge tthe sound out the back speakers?
Yes the stereo does have the FIE (front image enhancer), i checked that too, but still only sound comes out of one set of wires.
I can't find the manual for the DEH 12 but the DEH 11 has only a 2 channel on board amplifier. The following was copied out of the manual of the 11
Edit I guess you can't believe the manual I pulled out a deh-11 at work and stamped on the face was 40W X 4
Amplifier (DEH-1100, DEH-11)
Continuous power output is 17 W per channel min. into 4
ohms, both channels driven 50 to 15,000 Hz with no more
than 5% THD.
Maximum power output ...................................... 40 W ´ 4

Very possible for the deck to take a dump on you. Easiest method would be to grab a spk thats just hanging around the house somewhere... atleast 4ohms, and try hooking it up to the rear outputs. if it doesnt work... sorry about the deck

No, the power handling capability of the speaker has nothing to do with how it loads the amplifier. Besides, you do not want the sound to come out of the rear more loudly than the front. A good sound system has the main sound source in the front where the people are.
So how old is this head unit? If it has a 4-channel amp and you have the settings correct, then it must be defective. Time for something new.
