I'm wondering if anyone has converted a harley-davidsons cassette to cd and used a steering wheel control from say, lightning audio, or if anyone knows of an after market conversion kit to retain the handlebar controls using a remote capable cd player

What year bike do you have, I have a 99 flhtcui and was able to swap out the factory cassette unit for a CD unit off a 02 model. Costly yes but works like the factory.
