To start, I am not at all an electrically inclined person. I’m not familiar with the proper terms or names for circuits or components etc. I am however an avid DIYer. I learn by doing.

So please go easy on me when I ask something that seems obvious to most.

On to my question.

I am looking to interrupt a circuit. I could just toss a switch in there to kill power (in this case to an ABS unit) but that’s not enough. What I want is to use a switch to open that circuit, cutting power to the ABS unit, but when the ignition switch is cycled, the circuit is reset to it’s normally closed position. Obviously I also want to be able to use the same switch to close the circuit without having to cycle the ignition.

I think I need as a starting point a momentary switch and at least one relay.

Can anyone help? I would need instructions and a schematic to help get me through this.

If you do not mind using 2 pushbutton switches.  On Normally open switch as in the diagram, and a Normally closed switch that will break the circuit  to unlatch it.  The following diagram will do what you desire.  It will disengage when you turn the key off also.  The fused 12V wire must be an Ignition source.

Thanks for the fast reply. Those look like they will do what I need but I’m not certain how to apply them.  Obviously I failed to provide enough detail of what I’m working on.

 

A more detail explanation (I hope) is; there is a single wire in the existing harness that connects the ABS control “box” to the ABS pump. It carries a 12v signal from the control unit to the pump. Disconnecting this wire kills the ABS pump and it’s function to the brakes. It’s this wire that I want to be able to switch open or closed. Preferably with a single switch for the sake of space

 

As mentioned before, I would like the switch to reset when the ignition is cycled for the sake of safety.  I don’t want to forget that I turned the ABS off after getting off the bike.

 

In case anyone is wondering why I want to disable the ABS, it’s for use on washboard dirt roads. They seem to confuse the ABS into thinking that there is no traction and you end up with no brakes.

 

My car’s fog lights (2004 Sunfire) are set up exactly as I want this switch. I push the momentary rocker switch on the dash, they come on. Push again they go off. Turn the ignition off and they reset to off if they were on.

 

The previous post is probably exactly what I need, I’m just not sure of how to splice it into that one existing wire.

I've been looking more closely at the 2nd schematic in the link (4th diagram from the top on the page).

Please be patient with me if this all seems extremly obivious.

If I'm correct, I would attach the wire i want to switch to the "fused constant 12v +" as indicated in the schematic. That would be the control unit side of the wire. The pump side of the wire would go to the "12V Output" in the schematic. And the momentary switch as indicated on the schematic.

Did I get that right?

Again I apologize for these simple questions. This electrical stuff isn't my thing.

This won't take any time to put together.

2 last questions.

What would I have to use for diodes? The circuit is 12v and the factory has a 20amp fuse installed.

Is the circuit in the second schematic you've linked to normally open or normally closed?

Any 1 amp diode will work.  Radio Shack sells them.  The device is normally open.   When it powers up, your device will be off.

30 is the common connection. 87A is the normally closed connection.  87 is the normally open connection.  When the coil is at rest 30 is connected to 87A.  When the coil energizes it pulls the actuator in and now 30 is connected to 87. 

A normally closed connection is connected with no outside help.  A normally open circuit is open until there is outside help.  (the electromagnetic field provided by energizing the coil)

Wire the output of the 4 relay setup to a 5th relay as follows.  Output of the 4 to 86.  Ground 85.  Battery to 30.  Your device to 87A
