Subject: gps drawing power from battery buzzer?

Hi all,

Firstly, i have very little electronics experience but do possess a brand new £35 multimeter :-)

Secondly, I fitted a Tomtom Rider GPS to my Yamaha Fazer 600 (60 plate) with a switch (that has a light) half way along the power cable to ensure I don't drain the battery when I am not using it. I would like to fit either a buzzer that activates when the bike isnt running or open to ideas from others as to how I can stop my battery running flat when I forget to turn the switch off.

Any help greatly appreciated in the form of ideas, advice, links or diagrams.

Dave

You can catch a wire at the ignition switch, or either the headlamp or the tail lamp that is hot only when the key is in the on position.

That will mean the buzzer is on constantly, no?! Unless you mean the power connection directly to the GPS?

I'm assuming your mean option 2, if that is the case, do I just connect both wires for the GPS power to the ignition wire?

I know I am sounding pretty stupid, but I am no I promise, lol.

How many wires total on the GPS? And what colors are the wires?

2 wires, red and black, these are attached to the same colour terminals on the battery.

Leave the black where it is and move the red one to the taillight wire. The harness with the taillight wire should pass right by the battery.

Gggggrrrrrr i managed to get it all wired up correctly and now the small transformer that converts the battery power input to 5v 2 Amp has decided to stop working. I checked with the multimeter, the 12v is going in, nothing out the other side, looks like the PCB is not working now... Any ideas?

Dave

P.s. thank you so much for the help so far.

There should be a fuse (or should have been a fuse) in series somewhere in the line before the box.

As I said, power is going into the box, its the output that is not working.

Can you open the box and see if there is a fuse on the circuit board?

Its a surface mount PCB and it has no obvious fuse. Would a picture help?

Would this be a suitable replacement?
