Hello all,

I am a complete n00b at electronics and I need some help with my 82' Yamaha XS400 SJ. My motorcylce operates a relay to only turn on the headlight once the motor is running. This is accomplished by running an AC lead from one of my stator wires (AC) to a relay via a diode. Now I have no idea how the original diode works but I tried replacing it with a standard 4 pin relay from Autozone. When the in line diode is installed, the relay buzzes and the headlight barely works. If I take the diode out, the relay works fine but I'm ground an AC current to the frame. I know the relay is buzzing because the AC current is being rectified and has no voltage half the time causing the armeture to rapidly open and close. My initial thought was to put a capacitor in line after the diode to store energy and provide a constant DC current. I went to Radioshack and bought the biggest capacitor I could (4700 uF and 35 VDC which I suspect is overkill) but when I hooked it up,the headlight blinked on then shut off. I flipped the capacitor around and it did it again. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

My question is do I even need to rectify the current if the relay is working? Would the AC current cause other problems around the bike? If so, How should I wire it up to work. I do have one last idea but I would like some feedback to know if I'm even on the right track.

Sorry, I meant to say "I have no idea how the old relay works". Guees I have diodes on my mind.posted_image
