Today I had the opportunity to try out the new Audiocontrol DQ-61. I used the processor in a 2013 Porsche 991. The 991 is Porsche’s latest rendition of the 911 and is the replacement platform of the mighty 997 chassis.
The Audiocontrol DQ-61 is a welcome addition to all of the other processors currently available on the market, including the Audison Bitone, Bitten, Alpine PXA-H800, and others. Audiocontrol wisely took a different approach than it’s competitors and chose to build a processor that comes in at under 400 bucks, does not use a computer to setup, yet retains the robust feature set that lets it aggressively compete with these other processors in the marketplace.
Audiocontrol DQ-61 Pros
No computer. No computer to setup means, no software to crash or updates and that equals a consistent installation and therefore a consistent end result every time.
Adjusting the time delay is as simple as turning a remote knob until you hear the sound that you are looking for.
No long mutes between adjustments. I was worried when I first read the manual and it said that there would be a short mute between every step of delay while programming delay. Very worried! Turns out that its just a slight tick and hardly audible at all. Audiocontrol purposely added this tick so that you could keep track of what you were doing while adjusting time delay. Tip: most processors on the market have a long mute and sometimes even a beep between steps in delay. Run fast and run far from any processor that does this. It’s not humanly possible much less reasonable for a person to make quick or accurate adjustments with this type of interruption between steps. Smooth and immediate results are absolutely critical to evaluation of your adjustments. Audiocontrol definitely got this right.
No auto tune or auto correction. Both of these features are a great idea on paper and a real bad nightmare in real life. This processor is six channels in with optional summing of those channels with an EQ and six channels out. Period. The way God meant it to be! As a side note; if you need more channels simply add another Audiocontrol processor (EQX, EQL, 6XS, EQS, DQ-61, etc).
Audiocontrol is American! I know for a fact that when I use an Audiocontrol product and if I ever need tech support that I will be speaking to an american that actually works in the same office as the decision makers of the company.
5 Year Warranty. Best in the industry.
Seriously high voltage output means a low noise floor. OEM integration products in today’s market are notoriously plagued with noisy low voltage crap. It’s nice to work with a piece that has the ability to dial in all of the voltage that you will ever need to combat a high noise floor.
Signal Sensing Remote Output Works! Signal sensing remote output on amps and pre-amps are notoriously unreliable, but that’s not a problem here. Audiocontrol has brilliantly engineered their product to look for signal voltage (AC or DC) in reference to ground instead of the more common method of voltage differential between positive and negative signal input. The end result is that the processor and all amplifiers attached to it will stay on as long as the factory system is on (no cutting out at low volumes). This means that you no longer need to connect your amplifiers remote turn on to Ignition and loose the RAP feature on late model Databus vehicles. :) ! Yea!!!!

Time delay is only available on two of the six channels. And then additional delay is available between those two channels and the remaining channels in the system (brilliant). Although! You can also add delay to channels 1 & 2 in tandem on top of the delay that you set to the left front (channel 1). This allows you to time align the front channels as a set from the rear and sub channels in a single step. You can also add a second unit to your system and have 12 channels to play with!
There are only six channels. Although this is hardly a complaint since there is nothing to stop you from adding additional Audiocontrol components in order to make as many channels with as much processing power as you will ever need.
No computer means no ability to save or load pre-saved settings. I use my iPhone to take a snapshot of the settings so that I can always go back.
