I have a JL 15" W3 and it stopped working and I noticed it stopped working because the tinsel wire running to the voicecoil pretty much burnt in half. Do I need tinsel wire to replace it, or could I use a piece of 16 gauge wire and solder it from the spade clip to the voicecoil myself?. Any help would be appreciated!. Thanks!

i have used the wire to repair a sub before and it worked fine.. also i have used a butt connector to splice the tinsel wire together also and had no problem there either..good luck

I will say this is the easiest repair besides a wire connector, you can soilder a 16gauge to it fine

I replace lead wire all the time, its not that difficlut to do. Tinsel lead is light gauge wire wound with fiberglass strands for streangth. The wires are set to certain leangth to prevent slapping against the cone or pulling out if to short. Using connector or soldering in jumper is a tempory solution. These wires take alot of vibration and any hard spots in the wire will break. Try finding a "blowen" speaker and steal its lead, if you cant find "new", your solution with 16g will work.

I appreciate the responses guys. I will probably just put in 16g wire, but the question is.. soldering it to the posts isnt a problem. Soldering it to the cone is, because it goes directly into the cone with no solder whatsoever. Any ideas?.

cut the tinsel a little bit back from the cone and try soldering to that instead of the cone itself... Try to get it the same length or close as the opposing one...for reasons stated a few posts up

If you carefully remove the dust cap, round centre cover on sub, you will find the lead wires are glued down and solder to the voice coil wire. You can scrap of the glue carefully with a knife and make the joint. Glue back down and replace cap.

Dont use reg wire IT WILL BREAK! ive tried it b4 w/a sub .

thanks for all the messages guys. I am getting all different answers.. astro is saying not to use regular wire, others are saying to use 16 gauge wire. Should I use 16 gauge regular speaker wire?.. or actual 16 gauge hard wire?

Do like the other guy said find a blown woof and une the wire from it if you cant find new, you need the flexable wire, the other stuff will break from the constent movement of the sub! TRUST ME been there done that!

what kind of sub is it even worth the time to fix it or is it cheap and easy to replace yeah i would think about that unless its a good sub then i would take the time and fix it
