What a fun car this was... I looked all over the net; called dei, scosche, etc. No help to be found anywhere. Finally the guys at soundgate.com had something posted on the web about this vehicle. It said, “you can’t remove the factory radio or replace it”

Of course having the intuition of a determined installer of 6 years. I thought, the hell with it. I’m going to give it a shot. Well 28 hours later it’s completed.

I installed an Pioneer avic-n1. I had to make custom mounting brackets and install kit out of MDF, while covering it in Vinyl. I was able to place the hideaway box for the AVIC directly underneath the radio. It was a tight fit, but after finagling with some back strap, I persuaded it to fit. The aftermarket radio has to be installed as far up as possible, below the plastic sub-dash channel piece.

Next… This will sound a little scary, but it must be done. Cut the fatory harness off and extend everywire except the speaker wires 18 inches. Dismantle the factory deck, removing the CD Changer part of it. Take a Toyota amplified harness, or cut rca's and resist them for an input. Now tag those rca's onto the speaker leads up front. White, red, black, etc. Hardwire your new head unit in.  Don’t worry about  the remote turn-on, there isn’t one. Unfortunatly, the factory radio is the only thing that can turn on the factory Pioneer amplifier. If I’m wrong please call me @ 559.449.0123, ask for Ray

I looked for 3 hours trying to figure out how and why it was dropping voltage the way it was. I came to the conclusion that it was something like databus, rds, crap.

By now you should have the aftermarket deck installed up front minus an antenna. Go to the back of the car right side of trunk pull all the liner out. First box you’ll see is the tuner, one plug and a diversity antenna. If you have the adapter use it, if not... you guess it, another hack job. lol… j/k

Next… Remember I said to save the factory radio plug and extend the wires, except the speakers?

Tag those wires into the tuner plug. You should have everything except ground. The "brown" wire, well if I have to tell you what to do with that, please stop now and don’t work on this car anymore.

This is the hard part. If you look up and high to the far right of the trunk you’ll see the factory amplifier. You’ll notice the amplifier has three plugs. The the amp down, it’s mounted with two ten mm bolts and one clip. One of the plugs has normal Toyota speaker colors that are heavy gauge. Plus two 12v and ground sources.

Ok if you’re adding an aftermarket amplifier you can grab your speakers here. The fronts are 2 ohm, rears are 4 ohm. The middle plug is coming from the front. The speaker wires are the only part if this plug that’s in use. The colors are the same are they are in the front. Remember, only four wires will be used in this plug.

4 wires. Cut the loom back so you have more access to the wire. Yes, I know… Another hack job.

Now the last plug should have all the wires you have on the tuner, right? Wrong. They are the same colors. but those are inputs to the fact. amp from the fm.. tuner only..... and since we dont want to feed this amp 2 inputs at the same time.. we are gonna trick it.. .. cut those 4 spkr wires also.. red.. white.. green .and black.. now on the middle plug the 4 wires coming in from the car.. that you cut.. run those into the last plug. instead of the tuner wires..  .. run your ant up front and your golden.. now on my system i did run the rears of the aftermarket deck and the rca's coming of the dash i hooked to front output.. so he retained fader/bal.. also the sub will work..  if you have any other questions about this car feel free to call the shop.. fresno ca.. superior sound.. 559-449-0123.. im ray again.. o yeah the vss wire is PURPLE / white.. behind the cluster.. or .. on the middle amp plug in the trunk.... just so you dont have to pull that cluster..also if you dismantle the radio... take the changer of the radio housing.. you can fit the stock deck right behind the fm tuner in the trunk......... just wrap it in carpet and stick it in there...make sure you adlust the voulme on the fact deck before you wrap it up.
