marine amp, is marine really needed

Hi guys,

Do you guys have any experience with "Non-Marine" grade amps being used in boats? If the amp is going in a 100% waterproof compartment, is "Marine" grade really needed. How about if it was in a boat, in a waterproof comportment, that goes in salt water.

I know some people make and arguement about "salty" air near the ocean, but does that really effect the amp? I lived on the beach for 2 years and didn't see any increased rust on my car, so I tend to not believe it.

We install non marine amps and radios in boats all the time. It sounds like you already know the answer to your question. As long as it does not get wet and stay wet for lengthy times, it will be fine. A marine radio or amp is probably a little less likely to have a problem. Notice I said a little less likely. A marine unit has a coating on the board, but they are by no means waterproof. If water gets to it and stays for a few days, they too will not survive.
