What are the differences between marine radios and standard radios?

more expensive and water resistance, that's about it

Basically, unless you're putting it in a boat (or a jeep that you're too lazy to put the top on when it's raining, which is what I would do), I wouldn't worry about it.

Generally I don't distinguish between the marine and automotive. Also marine audio equiptment isn't waterproof.

My real question is, A guy at work swapped out a Jensen marine radio, which never ran his battery down during down time, to a pioneer cd player, that ran his battery down. There is some sort of filter on the 12v con wire on the Jensen, could that be what keeps it from running down?

more then likely what was on the kensen was a fuse box, or a noise filter.   A radio should not run down the battery by itself under no curcimstances.    If you are running amps then yes It will run down the battery while the car is not on,    But the current draw of just a radio would take hours upon hours to kill a normal battery
