Subject: generator, boat?

I have a 2001 Crownline 239 DB (deck boat) with the following set-up:

I have (2)-Kicker L7's 12-inch sub's with (2) Kicker KX 650.1 sub amps. and (1) farad cap

I also have (4) Cerwin Vega 6x9's (300watts I think) and (4) 6-1/2 2 ways with (2) Kicker KX 650.4 amps

The boat has a dual battery system, Pergo switch, with (2) Odyssey PC1700 deep cell marine batterys.  The system will play for over an hour (at loud levels) before the battery starts dying .  At that point I have to switch to other battery and restart the boat to re-charge the batteries.  Well, running a boat a idle speeds sucks up gas!!!  So I bought the Honda EU1000i generator to charge the batteries while the boat is stationary.  The Honda generator's output is AC so now I need a AC to DC converter.  Does anyone have any experience with this type of application or provide any input?  Most stereo shops I have been to can't help because they have not done it.

The Honda generator is rated at:

120V
1000W max.(8.3A)
900W rated (7.5A)

Will this be sufficent to keep the batteries charged and play the system at the same time???

I dont think its enough to keep that system charged for constant playing, but damn, that generator kicks ass, good choice. I work for a HVAC contractor, and i know a guy who got one of them, they are serious quality generators.

I wonder if theres any way you could incorperate a spinning car alternator or anything, like if you change the cam so to speak? anyone ever do that?

I am not familiar with the spining alternator, but thanks for the input.

I know a guy some time ago who had a 5 horse briggs motor running a 1 wire alt that went to his batt in his boat. he was running 12 volt spot lights. It was a cool little rig. You could get a 1 wire 250 amp alt , and 1 more pc1700 batt  with a honda 6 horse and run your system off of it, and keep it seperate from your boats elc system. if you put a automotive muffler on the motor, and build a compartment for it. It will be real quiet . I'd run 1/0 awg from the alt to the batt then 1/0 from your batt to a dist block then 4awg to your amps. You can power your head unit too. that's what i would do. good luck with your project.posted_image

get the biggest battery charger you can

another thing - if you can still take the generator back - honda makes a small (like you can carry it with one hand) generator that has a DC output and AC output.

wait - that's one of the generators that has DC output - just hook the DC output up to the batterys and have fun.

That gen will not put out the amperage that he will need to run that system he's got 2600 watts he's drawing 2 hundred amps,

Hi by the way the company name of the switch id Perko. You have a large draw of amps on the system along. You can add a high amp two bank charger that you can pick it up a marine store like West Marine. Quest is one company that makes different rating chargers and multi out puts. It also depends if you are going to put the generator as a fixed mounted item you may want to get a inverter/charger unit installed. They do get expensive. Hope this leads you to the right direction.

I have read a little info on the two bank chargers....So are you saying that I could plug the charger into the Honda generator via the AC plug, then connect the charger to the batteries?  I was told by someone not from hear to use a AC to DC converter beause the converter would put out 50-60 amps of continous power.  The Honda generator is portable but I am making it fixed mount am placing it in the engine bay compartment.

The Honda generator does have DC with battery clip output but it is only 8 amps.  But isn't that more of slow charge?

You can use a converter and have it wired in series with one of the batterys to have the same voltage and the combined amps. But the higher rating ones will run you a pretty penny. I suggested the charger becasue you can always have one battery fullly charged so you can start the engine. The other way you can increase the time is a adding an other battery to make it a bank of two battery or more in series to make the amperage higher to have a longer run time and have the other battery for starting the engine when you want to leave(example switch turn to one that will have only one battery for starting engine only and turn to two where you have two or more battery just for playing system, blender posted_image , etc when at the sand bar parting) that will give you a longer play time with that set of battery. You can determine play time by the rating of the battery with the amount of amperage you are using. This is just another way but it al depends on the way you want to run the battery charging system and the amount of money you want to spend. Personnally this is the way I have my boat setup (4 12" on one old MTX 225HO to 1ohm load and 6 6-1/2" on a 4 channel MTX ??? model). good luck, Victor
