I am looking to purchase a pair of Bose 251 outdoor speakers to be placed on the rear of my boat when I want extra tunes. Specifications for the speakers state:

  • Compatible with amps or receivers rated 10-200 watts per channel/rated 4 to 8 ohms
  • 100W IEC continuous power handling; rated 6 ohms

I am not sure what IEC continuous power handling is nor know anything about 6 ohms. What should I be looking for in an amp to adequately power these speakers? If any special wiring is needed, diagrams would be greatly appreciated.

I have a RF P4004 that is 200W x 2 @ 4 Ohms bridged RMS (4 Ohm stable bridged) that someone told me should work just fine. I am more than willing to purchase the right amp if I know what to look for.

Thank you in advance!

Lets see, boat and humidity + a non marine coated circuit board = not a good idea. Infinity makes a nice little marine amp that should do the trick for you and will work with the speakers you have. There are of course other brands to look at as well, but one that is constructed of marine coated boards and components as well as stainless screws etc. should be at the top of the list. Here on the salt water (Canada does indeed have coastlines) a non marine amp will get eaten alive in a matter of months, seen it way too many times now.

Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

Thank you for the reply.. the only Infinity amp I have found has the following specs:

Infinity 2100m 125 Watt x 2 Stereo Marine Amplifier
MSRP U.S. $: $354.95
Power Output: 125 watts x 2 into 4 ohms, 150 watts x 2 into 2 ohms, or 250 watts x 1 into 4 ohms bridged.
Frequency Response: 10Hz - 40kHz
Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 91dB
Line-Level Sensitivity: 250mV - 6V
Speaker Level Sensitivity: 6V - 16V

Other brands such as Bazooka, Clarion & JL Audio also make marine amps. Is there something specific I should be looking for to maximize the 251's ability (100W IEC; rated 6 Ohms)?
