Hello,

I did a search before posting, but I didn't see anything on either of these two systems by Code Alarm. I had both of these installed in a new 2008 Nissan Altima and have a few questions.

CarLink allows you to dial a 1-800 number and turn your car on. It is pretty cool, but it usually takes 1-2 minutes to start the car. I've had it start in as little as 20 seconds, and I've had it take 2 & 1/2 minutes. I was just wondering if any of you people have any experience with this system and could tell me why it takes so long?

The remote start I put in is the CA440SS. It has a 1000 foot range, but I'm not sure that is accurate. I previously had a Viper 160XV which seems to have a better range. Bottom line it does not seem to be as good as the Viper. Am I right or am I just imagining this? Here are links to both remote starts.

Thanks in advance.

1. I believe the CarLink piece works using pager technology. It's been a long time since I've had a pager, but I think the response time does vary a bit.

I know it's probably not the answer you want to hear, but I don't think there's much you can do. But the piece is something you'd use when you're out of range of the remote control........like if you're at an airport, riding a train, or you're maybe in a restaurant a few blocks from the car......by the time you make it to the car, it'll already be running anyway.

2. I install Pursuit by Audiovox, but it's all pretty much the same product. (Audiovox owns Code Alarm.) I've heard very few customer complaints about range, but I've never tried to do a test comparing it to other brands.

But, it's at least worth checking the placement of the antenna.

It shouldn't be jammed in the upper-left corner of the windshield (ugly), and it shouldn't be behind the black dot-matrix tint material in the middle of the windshield (supposedly hurts range).

It should be somewhere in the center of the windshield, behind the mirror, and with the bottom 1" of the antenna BELOW the black area.

I like to snap off the Altima's black plastic channel that goes over the wires for the mirror, and run the antenna's wiring in there as well....makes it look really nice.

Also, if you are new to the product, the double-push to start needs to be done at just the right speed, or it doesn't work.

You want to push for one second, release for one second, and push for one second again....not too fast. It doesn't hurt to push the button three times, just to make sure. (But don't push four times, that puts it in timer mode.)
