want to add perimeter lights

I have a 96 Dodge Ram 2500. It has an after market alarm w/remote lock system on it. I would like to add Perimeter lighting, I think thats what its called. When I unlock it with the remote the dome light comes on for a timed amount and goes out. I would like to tie the backup lights, low beam headlights and running board lights to the dome light. I know I need a relay and maybe diodes. The thing I don't know about is How do I keep them from coming on when I just open the door? I do understand some electrical but not fluent in it.

You would want to hook a relay up to the domelight output of the alarm.  You would then use that relay to trigger individual relays for each light.  Diodes wouldn't be a good choice here because you are dealing with quite a bit of current (low beams).  So, instead of using diodes for isolation I would recomend using relays for isolation.

i sugges you use the domelight supervision, reverse lights, and parking lights. Its not really necessary for the low beams. But if you wish to do so, make sure you isolate each circuit properly with a relay like kpierson mentioned.

I think I understand, having mulitible relays keeps the lights from back feeding when I turn on the lights, but will it also opperate the perimeter lights when I just open the door? The dome light will come on.

No, all  the circuits will be isolated by the relays.  The coil of the relay (the part that tells it to switch) is electromechanically isolated from the contacts of the relay (what you actually switch).  Therefore, after you install the relays everything will still be electronically independent.
