I installed a remote start in my friend truck about 2 years ago.. no problem.. At the beginning of this winter he told me that after he remote started when he put the key in and turn to the run posistion, the stater engages as he turns the key.. I know that this happens on the Toyota Echo.. but has anyone else had this problem... At first he thought there was aproblem with the remote starter itself but after I replaced it.. I told him that it is the ignition switch in his truck..  Can I put a relay in line with the starter wire?

You need to isolate the starter wire. Use a relay cut the strter wire. 87a gets the car side, and 30 gets the key side. 86 12volts, and 85, ground while running.

Your remote start output starter wire needs to go in front or before this relay.

Haven't seem it on a Frontier but have on an old Pathfinder. You could disconnect the unit for a few days to see if it is RS related tho it probably is....

I just did a start in an Xterra the other day and had the same issue. You need to isolate the Accessory wire with a relay to fix the issue...

30- BCM side of Accy. wire

87a- Keyside of Accy wire

87- Accy. output from Rem. start unit (High current + 12V will also work)

85- Neg. accy output from Rem. Start

86- +12V

Install it like everyone will see EVERY part of it.

How does isolating the accs. wire keep the starter wire from kickin?

I have seen this problem on nissans, if you put your meter on the "starter wire" while the car is running(from the remote starter) it should not get any voltage when you put your key to the either accessory or ign position, putting a relay on the starter wire and using the gwr neg output is the fix.

yea i dont see how isolating the ignition would do much. starter wire should be isolated.

85 - constnat 12v
86 - GWR
87a - Start wire keyside
87 - start wire motor side

i have only seen this issue on toyota cars (specifically camry, echo and corolla)

It was the Altima you had to relay-isolate the accessory wire. I never heard about that on other Nissans.

I think on this Frontier, it's going to be the starter wires.

How to check:

Remote start car, leave running.

Being careful not to bump into the brake and kill the remote starter, untape and separate the car's two starter wires.

Insert key and slowly turn it to Run.

If it doesn't grind, that was the problem. Go ahead and reconfigure the two starter wires so that they're separate.

depending on the r/s unit you are installing, if it comes with a starter-kill feature, just install it as install it as if you were hooking up an alarm (ie on DEI... green to switch side of starter wire, violet to motor side of starter wire). This is an easy way to fix the problem.

well i have seen where they label the relay as

STARTER DEFEAT/ANTI-GRIND

to be honest, i have done this and it doesnt work for me.
85 - ignition
86 - ground when armed (starter kill)
87a - starter wire key side
87 - starter wire motor side

but thing is the ground when armed is only good until you press unlock. if you get inside and "accidently" turn the key to start(its dumb but it happens) no matter what, it will GRIND. I dont know if you guys do this setup, but this is what i do.

85 - ignition
86 - ground when armed (start kill) AND ground while running(prevents accidental grind) both diode isolated
87a - starter wire key side
87 - starter wire motor side

that way i never see a custome come back and say i have grinded the engine a few times. i think this menthod is good because if they disarm, the relay is no longer energized, but the GWR is powering the relay until IGNITION is turn on, breaking contact to the starter wires.

I'm tellin ya'll, relay isolate the Accy.... I just did one... The starter grinds between the off and #1 position on the key cylinder, and if you isolate the accy it no longer does it.

KarTuneMan,

Thanks just did that today and it works.  My alarm(AGA 1201) has an option for starter kill in case of theft  but my concern is it activates a relay which is "normally closed" meaning power is always applied to this relay when armed.  Will this drain my battery in case I don't use my car for days?

Thanks
