i usually install mine in the top left corner of the windshield. The only time I alter that location is if there is a heavy tint. If there is, then I mount it jsut below the tint. I have tried mounting it both in the corner as well as in the center by the mirrors, and I have personally never seen a difference in range.

Either pointed down or towards the driver.
I like to keep them out of the line of sight of the driver.

in some cases (mainly for gifts), i actually hide the antenna above the windshield in the headliner. After the come back to have it installed on the window, they come back in later to say that they have seen no difference in range between when it was tucked up in the headliner or if it was attached to the window. Now I actually get every few customers that request to have the antenna tucked into the headliner so it cannot be seen. And I have yet to have a single one come back with range issues.
Just something to think about for those customers who complain about seeing the antenna.
