Subject: car wont start with key

So my remote start worked fine for years then I had a light bulb on the fron corner marker go bad.  Fixed it then my car wont start with the key only with the remte start.  I have been trying to fix this for some time now.  I have tapped into the starter relay under the hood.  The car will turn over then run for 1 second then shut off with the key in the on/run position.  So sounds like a security prob.  I can push the remote start button with the starter wire from the brain unhooked and activate the relay under the hood by hand and the car will start and run.  I have unhooked the remote start and alarm and Paskey transpoder from the car and it still wont start with the key.  I have tried both keys that I have.  I am getting 12v on my yellow starter wire when the key is turned to the start pos but nothing happens.  Any one have any ideas??????  Please help

If you see a resistor in the key it is a vats system, if it wont start with the key it may be having a problem reading the key, which is a common problem.

Have you tried another key??

If you know a little about electronics it not very difficult to bypass this system. do you know how to use and ohm meter?

Yes pleas tell me how more info.  I can hook up a push button switch. anything

See it you can get a reading on the resistor pellet in the key is the first step.

4.71k on one key 4.72k on the ohter.  Now what

ok good, now you should find a orange colored harness which leads to the ign switch, this is covering two very small white wires, cut the orange cover very carefully and see if you find two wires inside of it. be very carefull you do not cut to far in the harness.

Then make sure the rest of the orange wire is not cut somewhere, it should lead to a junction under the dash.

BTW, how was the transponder wired in??

I dont remember how it was wired in I did it so long ago.  Those wires have allready ben spliced into.  What do I do with these wires?  Put a resistor inthere?  Thansk

yes, cut the wires and put a resistor across the wires leading into the junction, the wires that lead to the key should not be cannected to anthing..

Isnt that jsut what the transponder does?  Could that transponder be bad if so why does it start ok with the remote start?  Anther thing I should mention is once the car is started put the key in hit the brake to shut off the remote start and you are in normal driving mode you can turn the key and it will grind the starter while the car is running?  I have to see if I have a restor that sise

I am thinking your reader in the ign switch is not reading the key properly which is causing your problems, if you do what I suggested (and it works)you would not need a bypass anymore, which is why I said to make sure there is nothing else connected to the white wires.

It will at least eliminate one thing which could be making your car not wanna start.

I am looking for a resistor now.  I though it may be a prob in the ignt as well.  If this works you are the man.  Ill update shortley.  By the way how close does my resistior have to be?

I would get the exact value, if it reads the wrong value it might go into shutdown mode, best the get it right the first time.

Also if that was the case that the ignition is not reading the keys resistance the car should still crank but not start right?

The car wont even crank in the start position?  Now what??????

I can apply 12v to the starter wire the same way turning the key would and still wont crank.

If it starts with the remote start I would check to be sure the starter wire is connected into the plug that leads to the ign switch, test to see if you have power comming from the switch.

Yea but like I said when I turn the key to start I still get 12v at the starter wire under the days

The vats system you have will NOT crank if resistance is wrong-- you will know this by the theft light being on on the instrument cluster-- then you have to wait 4 minutes to try again--- Is your theft light on??? when trying to start?? and stays on for 4 minutes??   Put the right resistor across those two white wires to be sure your key pellet sensing is the problem..

Ok i have a security light that is on steady now that I have been messing around.  Now it I put my key in the ign I should see the resistanse of the key down under the dash on the wires under the orange loom.  Should I see the resistance between the two wires?  So I should be able to unplug the harnes and put my meeter there and see the resistance when I put my key in the ign.  Do I have to turn the key to run or start or should I see it as soon as I put the key in???
