apologies if this has been covered, I have searched but can't come up with an answer.
I already have a start button wired into my car like this:
30: +12v constant
87: starter motor
85: +12v ignition (switched)
86: one side of momentary switch, the other side to ground
the only trouble is, when my alarm turns on the immobilser, say after when I've been driving and then switch the engine off, I can start the engine using my button BUT when I turn the key the engine doesn't start as the immobiliser is doing its thing
Can someone tell me why the start button has bypassed the immobiliser?

....uhhhh.... what..? First what kind of car is this? So if you put the key in, turn to on position, and press the start button, it will or will not start? When you say 'alarm', are you referring to a factory alarm, or aftermarket? Is there a remote starter on the vehicle?

Just take 30 on the relay from the ign side of the imobilsed ign lead NOT permanent!

ok - let's go through this again.
I turn off my alarm. I start my engine. I drive around, I turn the engine off. If I then leave the car and DON'T turn on my alarm my immobiliser passively arms after 30 seconds but the alarm does not. The alarm LED is flashing to let you know the immobiliser is active. I get back in the car. I put in the key and turn the ignition. If I haven't turned off the immobiliser using the alarm fob, the car will NOT start by turning the key in the ignition because the immobiliser is doing its job, however, if in the same state (immobiliser active) I use my start button, the engine will start and I can drive away with the LED still flashing to say the immobiliser is active. My pushbutton starter is bypassing the alarm/immobiliser. What have I wired wrong? the alarm is a viper5000, the car is an FTO

By you saying immobilizer, I am thinking transponder chip in key. But by your description it sounds like a simple starter kill using a relay. Depending where you connected pin 87 (starter motor), it may or may not bypass your security system. If you connect it right behind the ignition switch, it will work just like the key. If you connect it to the starter solenoid, or anywhere on the other side of the alarm it will work regardless if the alarm is armed or not.

Do what Howie said. Pin 30 of your relay should be going to the ignition side of the starter kill (immobilizer) and not the starter side. -------------

thanks guys - by ignition side I take it you mean key side? so wire my start button relay like this:
30: Keyside - NOT +12v constant
87: starter motor
85: +12v ignition (switched)
86: one side of momentary switch, the other side to ground
