Looking at 2-way security for my new, used car, I'm curious to see your opinions about the Scytek stuff. Mainly the Astra777 or is the trusted brand Viper 791xv/5900 just the better choice?

I've sold and installed them both, and I think the main differences are in ease of installation and tech support. As far as the reliability of the products themselves I've really not noticed any difference.
DEI has far and away the best tech support in the industry...Scytek has people who can read a problem-solving algorithm chart and who seem to think that everyone on the other end of the line is incompetent.
Wiring information is about the same from either company.
Also, DEI products are IMHO easier to program options (you can program options sequentially, instead of having to reenter the programming mode after you change a single setting). In addition, DEI's documentation is better and the outputs are somewhat more versatile in how they can be programmed.
I don't like the way DEI's arm/disarm only locks or unlocks on the first press of the button. As far as I figure it should work the same as every factory remote does, locking and unlocking until the user gets tired of playing with it. This doesn't sound like a big issue but it's annoying if you've locked the doors with the switch, to have to arm and then disarm to unlock them.

you can press unlock a third time to unlock the doors, it alternates between unlock and second unlock for each button press.. so if you lock it with the switch, the system still thinks it's unlocked, so when you press the button, it does a 2nd unlock pulse to a different wire (dedicated for this), press it again, and it'll go back to primary unlock.. and so on.
of course, this is assuming you have individual lock and unlock buttons, not the lock/unlock on the same button..

Hurleyloser, unless they've changed it in the past few years the remote wouldn't do anything beyond the second unlock push...specifically I know a 562T (valet with separate buttons) and an 800ESP would not do that. They changed the internals a bit in late '06 but I'm not sure they altered that at all.

Let me tell you about my experience with Scytek. I bought a galaxy 5000rs off ebay in January 08. It crapped this passed weekend. It just ceased to function. Scytek claims lifetime warranty, 1 year free after that 25.00 handling fee. When I called them the insisted on the 25.00 fee even though it was only 3 months old. I think this is very bad customer service. I was very pleased with the product until it failed. there tech support seemed weak, as a matter of fact I have a feeling the whole operation is offshore and the have an office suite here in CA with a secretary and 1 or 2 techs. So I paid 9 dollars to ship it back and had to send a MO for 25 bucks with it. That being said my next alarm/RS will be another brand!!! See how bad customer service affects your business?

i have installed both, so has chris as he mentioned. I dont see a major differance. Its just user preferance. I just have to say the scytek remotes are kinda cheap feeling. The range in some areas is decent. DEI and scytek say their units are capable UP TO 3000ft, but you really get 2200 - 2600 feet TRUE range.

As mentioned above, I'm not thrilled with Scytek's customer service either...I was in California and wanted to pick up some product at their office once, and they acted like it was a real bother just to take my order. Everyone at the office was wized off about something or other.
That aside, I don't think DEI would give you any customer service on an eBay purchase either - buying any kind of security product on eBay should be assumed to mean that you won't have any recourse if the product goes bad, other than through the eBay seller.

Check out metra's new alarm line. They have metalic style transmitters and stuff. If you've ever seen anything from scytek you know it's quality (sarcasm) any brain that can be taken apart without any tools doesn't really come across to me as solid.

Aftermarket Generation - the stuff that AutoGlow is selling now...there's a stellar brand. Incidentally it did require screws to open the brain - however the one piece antenna/shock sensor managed to fall apart completely. Also the main chip was programmed by a retard so none of the operation made sense.
Where's Metra's alarms at? No info on their site!

i doubt this is reall metra. metra makes dash kits and harnesses. Maybe its some made up website because if yu go metralonline/catalogues, nothing exists.

Scytek, to reiterate my above comments, makes product that is just about as reliable as any AFAIC. Their customer service and tech support leaves something to be desired however.

I have had my scytek alarm for over 2 years now and I totally love it. I am still on its original battery for the remote. I get great range. I honestly cant complane about their stuff one bit.

i got a scytek unit on my accord, a compustar pro p2w900fm-as on my mom's 02 camry after upgrading from 1-way artic start. Cant complain about either units. both very good and installed by myself. noobie, are you using a 2way remote? i have never seen a scytek factory battery last more than 2 months. I use high capacity hybrid batteries and they last about 5 months under normal use. if i abuse it, then 3 and a half months.

No sorry I meant the 1 way remote. I dont like using the 2 way because the battery doesnt last ver long.
