i am about to purchase the viper 5701 security/remote start system. do i need the bitwriter in order to program the system? or is the bitwriter just for convenience

I am also looking at getting the new 5701 and by my understanding you can program the system by the key and the valet switch...the bitwriter is more of a convenience thing mostly for shops who would do alot of alarm installs and need it more
