Ok, so its a 2001 Honda civic.  The original installer put in the Python 990 with the DEI 556H module to bypass the key for remote start.  The installer programmed the Valet Key (gray key) instead of the master key.  I looked up the manual and read how to program the key.  After doing such with the right key it still doesnt work.  I talked to the original installer and he claims that you can only program the module once, and since he programmed the wrong key, we need a new module.  Is this correct?  or is there a way to reprogram the 556H?  I checked all connections and they were correct, unplugged the module and followed the program steps, any other suggestions?  This is for a friends car, just trying to help them out.  Any info is greatly appreciated!

I do not know if that is true but as far as I know the gray key will not program therefore its not programmed.  The 556H has two modes.  The module needs to see mode 1 and WIRED in mode 1.  Hold the button on the 556h and insert the harness.  It should illuminate at that time in which you should release the button and turn the ignition on.  The module will show its mode by blinking.  Make sure it just blinks steadily at 1 by just pressing the button once.  Also make sure that the wiring is for mode 1. After that turn the ignition off and then on and the module will illuminate showing you it programmed.....PS I don't like 556H modules....I would use a HONDA SL-3 or PKH32 and or XK05.

Yes I have confirmed that the wiring is correct for mode 1, as well as confirm the mode on the module with the single blink after holding the program button while inserting the harness as you said.  At which point the LED comes on, I release the program button and turn the ignition on.  Then the light confimed the mode by blinking steadily with one blink each time.  At  that time I turn the ignition off and back on.  It then illuminates a solid LED to confirm programming and which point I then turned off the ignition again and initiated the remote start sequence.

I have tried this several times, and checked all the connections.  I have even scrolled through the modes back to mode 1 before turning the ignition back off.  My initial thought was that it was a bad unit, however the original installer just claimed that since it had already been programmed to the wrong key, it could not be programmed again.  Either way I suppose I figured a new unit was needed.

Im not familiar with those other models.... are they keyless versions as well?  I almost put in the DEI version needing the key, but I do not recall the model number... 555U possibly........

Any other ideas would be appreciated!

Those Honda DEI units sometimes don't work.  Try another 556H and see if it programs.  BTW, did you check your ground while running wire??? If all else fails you can get a idatalink module or an xk05/pkh34.  All of them are data modules that do not require a key in a box.  Yesterday I used a 555x and it didn't program either  until I swapped it for another 555x which fixed the problem.
