Electric Tailgate lock

02 Dakota, 5 wire aftermarket door locks, operated by alarm

I am trying to install an electric tailage lock and do not know what wires to connect to, the instructions are for trucks with factory power locks, everything I have tried keeps constsant power on the lock and I only want momentary to move the lock solenoid.

Look for a pair of wires that test as a ground-----but when you lock the doors, one turns positive....and when you unlock the doors, the other turns positive.

These colors are commonly blue and green on aftermarket locks, but not always. In any case, look for non-factory wires snaking into the doorboot, and test 'em there. Or, operate the locks and listen for relays clicking....find the relay pack and do it there.

And once you find the wires, don't worry so much about which way to hook up your tailgate lock. If you connect them backward, your tailgate lock will simply work backward.....make your connections temporary, and then test for proper operation before making them permanent.

If you can.. Pull the door panel and say your self probing time. I think you were saying that you have 5-wire door lock actuators in the door which do act funny in some cases. You might want to probe or pull the doors on the passanger side. The drivers actuator has extra wires to sense the plungers movement and will make it more difficult.

Thanks for the help, I got it working, just for info both door actuators had 5 wires, I was on the right track with the blue and green but was trying to simulate on a work bench with a couple of relays should of just went to the vehicle to start.
