I have a 2002 GMC Sierra and am looking to put in a remote start. Doing my research i've found that this truck is suppose to have a passlock II and requires a bypass to do a remote start...but my question is do i really need one? When i bought this truck used a year ago it only came with one key...so i had a second made just so i could unlock the doors...didn't think it'd work to start the truck because of this new technology. But when i tested the key I was able to actually start the truck. Should i have been able to do this? If that worked should a remote start work without the bypass?  Thanks for the help.

Yes, you will need a bypass module. The passlock II system is built into the key cylinder so no special keys are needed. You will need a resistance learning module such as a 555L, 556L or PLJX. Or a data module such as a GMBP or 1700G. These are DEI bypasses but other companies sell modules that do the same thing.

you maght not need one if yuo are able to start the car with an all metal key i'v seen this before in a cuple of GM trucks and Vans. do this hook everything up and try to Remote start and see what happends if it cranks but wount turn over then you do need it .

the anti-theft system is built into the key-cylinder not the key itself.

You need a bypass.

Ditto on the need for a bypass - all GM trucks since 1998 have had Passlock II and the new body style are switching to Passkey3+ as well, which uses transponder keys and not regular metal keys like your current truck.

Additionally, on a lot of vehicles Passlock won't even let it crank if it doesn't see the right code from the key cylinder.

Well if you made a key from wal-mart you should be able to start the truck. But it will shut down as soon as you start the drive and you WILL lock the passlock system up. This will cut your fuel pump if it doesn't see the right resistance.

Follow what everyone said on this thread. You will need to bypass this Passlock II. You can do it with Relays and resistors or merly purchase a bypass mod. word

dswift, as said many times earlier in this post, a plain metal key will start and drive a vehicle with Passlock just fine - the resistance is entirely done via the key cylinder.

What is the difference in the 555l and 555lw?

555L and 555LW should be the same product.

I think the W stands for White.

DEI started putting all their accessories in nearly-impossible-to-open-without-cutting-yourself plastic containers, with holes to put them on stores' peg hooks.

After everyone complained, they started selling another version of the same product, usually in a white box, with the W suffix. The store had to keep them on a stockroom shelf instead of in the showroom, but they were easier to open.

The 555LW has a very colorful box, instead of a plain white one, but it still gets the W in the name.

Thanks for the info. I thought they seemed the exact same.

W denotes cardboard box    no W denotes clam shell packaging
