I Installed remote starter in January 08 on a 2006 G6. Remote starter works fine, car runs fine,lo lights on. Customer had shop inspect car for emissions and they couldn't pass because their machine couldn't communicate with vehicle computer. Garage (mechanic) blamed it on car starter. I used BypassKit XKO6 with PKG7 firmware. Is this even possible? Any info would be appreciated.

I have now officially heard it all, good Lord man.

Take the car to someone that can plug into the OBD2 plug.... if they can "read" it.... so can anyone else.

PLUS.....why in the hell would they need to talk to the ECM/BCM, whatever you wish to call it. ???

They just ram a sniffer up the tail pipe and measure friikin gas.... sounds like B.S. to me my friend!

New York emissions and safety inspection is done by state computer which reads all monitors in vehicles computer. All monitors have to be ready and functioning properly. If even one monitor is not ready or working properly vehicle automatically fails. State computer couldn't read/communicate with vehicles computer there fore vehicle didn't pass. It was plugged in OBD2 plug. Every time they plug it in it cost $21.00. Can car starter cause this to happen? I have never heard such thing. I have done hundred's of car starters and I have never had any problems with any of them.

I would disconnect the bypass(s) from the car, pull the power fuses and pay the 21 clams to send it back thru.... (the R/S is now "off line") THEN, pray it passes.

I have been in this industry for short of 20 years, installing for 15..... NEVER seen, or heard of this, as an issue!

But.......anything is possible.

Massachusetts inspection is similar to what andylaslo said about New York..........they plug into OBDII, and if there are no codes, the car passes emissions.

If there are emissions codes, the car gets a chance to run on the dynamometer (those rollers you see in the floor, where the car's tires spin), with an exhaust sniffer.

Andy......

I know it's hard to get a straight story out of anyone, but did they say that they "couldn't communicate," or simply that there were codes present?

I know that on these newer GM cars, if you power up ignition and accessory for remote start, but you don't supply signals to the white wire (through resistors) at the ignition switch, it'll trip at least one BCM code, but not turn on any warning lights.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to invest $50 in an inexpensive code reader, just to clear any Check Engine lights you might trigger on future jobs............and then connect it to this G6 and see if you can read codes or not.

Or, if you have the luxury of the customer leaving the car with you, drive it over to AutoZone or one of those places that'll scan the car for free, and see what they find.

Garage was ripping off people. Without doing anything to a car I took it down to my local inspection station and car passed. There were no codes and computer was reading fine. Guy that inspected it said that other garage might of had a faulty plug, cable or box. He also said Monro, Midas and some other garages do this on regular basis to make extra money for fixing things that are not broken to generate more business (he use to work for them so he knows because he use to do it him self to pocket $). Thank everyone for your support. Be aware in case it happens to you.
