Hey guys!

I've got myself a Clifford Matrix 3.3x car alarm (installed by a guy with 12 years experience installing Viper, Clifford and such) in my Seat Altea (for reference see Seat Altea Owners Manual - English - 2006 Version)

Everything worked fine until I had to switch the batteries in the remote (both of them) - after that (or some days later) both of the remotes stopped communicating with the alarm... The car/alarm just doesn't respond to any buttons.

I've tried to reprogram the remote (see Clifford Responder LE Model 3.3X - Security and Remote Start - Installation Guide page 56 +57) - The whole rutine goes fine until I have to do #4 - when I press the "lock" button, the unit does NOT chirp and as soon as I leave the learning mode (by closing door or just waiting 30 secs), the car makes 3 or so beeps (showing that the learning routing is ended).

I've tried to delete and then reprogram the remotes (again, see Clifford Responder LE Model 3.3X - Security and Remote Start - Installation Guide page 56 +57).

I've tried to put the remote in the 2nd car mode (see
Clifford Responder LE Model 3.3X - Security and Remote Start - Owner’s Guide
page 13) and then reprogram the remotes (again, see Clifford Responder LE Model 3.3X - Security and Remote Start - Installation Guide page 56 +57).

I've tried to disconnect the cable from the antenna for 10 mins and then tried the remotes again - same negative result...

I've also tried the following method to see if the remote is open or closed for the communication:
Press F button until amber light comes on
Press and hold unlock button for 1.5 seconds
If the lock light is on, the remote is locked.
If lock light is out, remote is unlocked
To lock or unlock press the lock button.

But when I hold the "unlock" button for 1.5 secs, it seems like something is wrong as the remote beeps and flashes the top led (sending, orange) each second. Also it doesn't work to lock or unlock with the "lock" button...

I've tried the previously described methods for many many times now and I've used 2-3 hours on it - without any positive result...

Any ideas are welcome!

First  it could be a defective antenna or a bad module, bad antenna cable.Did you purchase from a directed dealer? if not yr out of luck, Or if you did ask for a replacement,It should be still under warranty.

Yeah, purchased from a direct dealer and we said he's waiting to get the new type of Bitwrite (because the old one can't work with my type of alarm) and then he'll look into it.

But until then I wanted to see if anyone else got some other ideas... :)

the remotes from the new LE line will "lock" up randomly.  With the bitwriter you can unlock the transmitters and you can reprogram them at that time.  Until the bitwriter is in hand, unfortunately I think you're stuck.  Some of the remotes even come from the manufacturer locked.  It's a glitch in the system that they are currently working on.

Dang... That's a pity... Can you link me to some of their article(s) about this problem or this is some "inside" knowledge?

And any idea if I can buy that Bitwriter on eBay or so and what model should I look for?

Thanks in advance and I'm glad to see the responses!

What brand of batteries are you using? Sounds like a stupid question but I am ready to through my Viper 5701 out the window. Apparently they decided to use CR2016's in the 2 way remote. Well I have purchased Sony and Energizer CR2016's When you stack them they are milled so thin they are shorting out one of the batteries. If you have the factory mitsubishi batteries and you have purchased either energizers or sony batteries look at them the + and - are almost the same height on the face of the battery where they touch the bottom battery and short out. I have 2 viper 5701 alarms both have this problem (pink for the wife, silver for me). The mitsubishi batteries are milled where the - sticks out a little more so the battery won't short out when stacked.

When i changed the batteries the remote wouldn't communicate at all. Change the batteries again, it would work but instantly report low battery, changed the batteries then it wouldn't work again!! :(

I have a work around, until i find out if Viper fixes this problem, its a crude work around but it keeps the batteries from shorting out. Involves small circle of paper slightly bigger then the battery, with a hole cut out in the middle. Slide between the two batteries, and a small piece of tin foil in the middle circle to make sure the circuit is complete. Crude but works. Have been thru 2 sets of batteries in the Silver 5701 which i have had since launch. I have had zero problems since preforming this upon battery replacement.

Also my remote is scratched to hell with the cheap paint they used!!

Don't know if that will help your problem, but its worth a shot.

Whoa... That's a completely new point of view on this remote issue...

I've just checked and the original ones are Mitsubishi CR2016 Lithium 3V.

Right now I'm using VIPOW CR2016, but I also got a package with WAMA CR2016. As I can see, all 3 brands has the exact same size...

Tomorrow when I'm back from work and gym I'm gonna try your method and see if it'll work! :)

And yeah, the same issue here with the paint - pity!

Once again, thanks for the ideas!

Well... I couldn't wait... Replaced my completely new (max 3-4 days old) VIPOW batteries with 100% completely new just packed out WAMA batteries...

Guess result?

The remote works again... (I didn't even had to reprogram it, neither did I had to use fozzie1's solution).

Wow... I mean... Who could've guessed this?

Thanks goes to fozzie1 for givin' some fresh ideas which brought me some positive results! :)

I'm glad it fixed your problem, plus gives me a new brand of batteries to find. :)

I will have to see if i can find those brand of batteries. I am looking for the Mitsubishi but haven't found them at a good price, local stores only sell energizers and sonys.

It's a bad design and its tough to get ahold of Directed, unless you are a dealer. My local install shop isn't much help, lol warranty. I would like them to fix the battery issue and the paint issue. Hell I would by a new 2way remote if these problems were fixed, just to avoid going to the local shop for warranty! Maybe someone here that is authorized could help us out and get the info from directed. The 5701 is a great alarm..... if they fix the issues with the transmitter.

Good luck! Thanks for the info on the batteries that work!! beats sliding paper and tin foil!

I spray painted all of my remotes with aircraft engine primer and a high quality paint, they look about million times better and the paint doesn't come off anymore. Just take out the electronics and the button pads and paint away, it only took one light coat of each. Hope that helps.

i am having the same battery issue as you all. My original batteries have died and ever since I replaced them with energizer batteries they last at max 3 to 4 days some don't even last an hour. I was wondering if the paper and aluminum foil idea is still working or not and does anyone know where to get these other batteries from in the immediate area of south louisiana?

Alright, I got the same unit installed and both transmitter and feature programmings got locked out.

DEI authorized installers know what's going on? What have they post over the DEI forum?
