Subject: adding horn when the doors are locked?

Hello everyone.

A few years back i installed a Valet 561R remote start system on my wifes 2000 Ford Tauras.  One of the main things I looked over is the fact the this remote start system only has a single button on the remote for the lock/unlock function.

I want add a horn beep only when the doors locked.  Is this as simple as connecting a wire from the (-) lock trigger to the dark blue horn wire that runs up the strering column to the horn?  Is there even a need for a relay?

thanks!

its just that simple. no need for a relay. one problem though, as i remember, with the 561r the horn output also happens with the unlock too and there is not a programming option to turn it off. it will honk once with lock and 2 times with unlock.

You will need to split the lock output with 2 diodes. You can use 1N4001 diodes, available at Radio Shack or any similar place (partsexpress.com). If you don't use diodes, the horn will honk when you lock the car with the switch inside the car.

The stripe side of the diodes will be facing the remote starter.

just curious but.......why in the world would it honk when you push the switch if he uses the horn output on the 561R?

Yes, use the horn output on the unit! It will honk once for lock and twice for unlock. The problem you will have using the doorlock wires is the honk will be 1.5 seconds long. Doesn't sound like much? hook it up that way and it will be an eternity. The horn output is a fraction of a second and is a much better way to go....

The 561r does not have a horn honk output.

your right it doesnt. i forgot about that. he needs to use the GREEN / WHITE factory alarm rearm wire though. thats still better than the lock wire and wont need diodes.

That would work fine. It would also honk the horn after remote starting too. It would be easier than adding diodes for someone without much experience.

Excellent! thanks everyone for your replys.  Great idea, I'm gonna use the GREEN / WHITE rearm wire.  That didnt even cross my mind.  One last question,  Since I'm going to connect the rearm wire to the (-) dark blue horn wire, is there a need for a relay?  I just want to make sure.

Thank again, I really appericate the help.
