1999 Toyota Camry V6
- No factory alarm
- Dealer installed Avital Remote Access 2
- Keys are metal with no obvious plastic covers or chips installed

Alarm system:
Viper 791xv w/ remote starter

Problem: Whenever I attempt to remote start the car, first the lights blink, and the engine begins cranking for ~2 seconds, then it shuts off. The 791 tries 2 more times with the same results. The diagnostic feature reports (3 blinks), low or no rpm signal. I don't think it's a tach signal issue? The weird thing is, if I have the key in the ignition it still behaves the same, but if the key is in the ON position, the remote starter will successfully start the car? Any ideas?

About the Remote Access 2
- Still connected
- Wires used; door lock/unlock, 12+volt, parking light, ignition switched
- All others including starter disable are grounded

Try placing the key in the ignition, leave it in the off position, then try and remote start it. If that does not work, make sure that the second ignition wire is connected.

Battery          WHITE          (+)          IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
Ignition 1          BLACK / YELLOW          (+)          IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
Ignition 2          BLACK/ RED          (+)          IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
     Accessory 1          BLUE/RED          (+)          IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
Starter 1          RED          (+)          IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
     Anti-Theft Type          UNIVERSAL IMMOBILIZER
Anti-Theft Descript          THE KEY SENDS AN RF SIGNAL TO THE BCM MODULE THROUGH AN ANTENNA LOCATED AROUND THE IGNITION CYLINDER
Key Sense          RED / BLUE          (-)          IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
Tachometer          YELLOW/RED          (AC)          AT IGNITION COIL

Try switching to voltage sense instead of tach and see what happens...

Are you sure you have the correct ignition wires connected?

With the key in the OFF position, it does not start.

I'm fairly certain I made the right connections using the chart at
https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/alarmdetail/2044.html for my car. It's possible I may have a bad solder connection, I'll try unplugging the remote start harness and checking to see if it see's voltage.

I also set the remote start to crank time instead of tach mode for 4-seconds, and it just cranks for 4-seconds; which makes me think you guys are right about the ignition wires not being connected properly. So I'll check later today, Thanks!

Did you power up the RED / white heavy gauge wire ? Which in turn will power up the ign2 wire during run & crank cycle.

sounds like you failed to power one of the 2 Ign wires... or you have your starters 2nd IGN programmed as 2nd ACC and it's dropping out during crank...

Went back and verified these connections:
Both Red (High Current 12v Input)
- White wire (ign harness)
- WHITE/ Red wire (ign harness)

Orange (Output to Accessory circuit)
- Blue/Red (ign harness)

Pink (Output to primary ignition)
- BLACK / YELLOW (ign harness)

Pink/White (Output to secondary ignition)
- BLACK/ Red (ign harness)

I also verified the 791 recognized the Pink/White wire as a secondary ignition output

The only wire not connected in the main remote start harness is the RED / White wire. I'm confused about this wire's purpose, it's specified:
RED / White (+) 12V input
Connection for high current outputs.

Whoops, I guess I need to learn how to read, that did it, haha, thanks a bunch guys for the help!

And this site rocks, without that wiring layout for the car, it would have taken me ages to figure this out!
