I have a 1995 Subaru Legacy SW that I use for winter time. I figured I'd throw a remote start in it. Here are my goals: I want a basic remote start - no alarm. I'd like to stick close to $100 (parts). From research the two units that I'm interested in are the Audiovox APS901 and the Compustar 1W900FM-S. Both are in my price range. The Compustar is about $40 more than the Audiovox. I like the small slim remote of the Audiovox. The Audiovox has a 1000' range. The Compustar advertised 3000'. The Audiovox will only blink the parking lights but the Compustar will honk the horn. I need to be able to start the car from 2 city blocks away. I would think that is about 600 ft. Also I assume both of these units give me no feedback that the car is started (1 way) so I guess the horn honk would be somewhat more telling. It would work for me at home because in the cold morning I can't see the car but I would hear the horn honk. OK which one should I go with?
Next up I do NOT think I have an immbolizer to bypass. Can anyone confirm that for me or tell me how to confirm it? Both of these units say that they can be used to unlock the car. I do NOT have any factory unlock remotes but I do have power locks in the car. Am I correct in assuming that I would need to install some type of add-on actuator in each door to lock/unlock with this system?
Lastly, I'd like use this thread to take me all the way through the purchase/install. I've read the manual on the Audiovox and I know I'll have questions about some of the wiring.

Forgot to mention it is an Auto Trans. Compustar works with both according to the manual but mine IS auto. Thanks.

Both the products you're looking at will not be warrantied, if they are not purchased AND installed from an authorized dealer.

I understand that and if we were talking about a lot of money here I'd seek out that qualified installer. Plus, I like doing it myself. I've been horrified at some of the work I've seen from $100/hour shops. I'm not saying there aren't good installers out there because there are. I just like doing it myself and this one shouldn't be that hard. Still looking for a hand...

if you already have power locks then you shouldn't have to install actuators unless there is something wrong with your stock locks. and if your car will be 2 blocks away then you should go for as much range as you can afford. and like loneranger said if you install it yourself you shouldn't count on having any warranty

Of course you could contact Chris Wallace, he's in Penn, N.B. Nothing to by-pass, and if I remember a one wire lock system about then, the fact is what you gain by not paying, you will lose in extra time, digging up the install facts etc and the possibility of damage to your vehicle. Frankly if someone came to me and asked for the info on the basis that they were doing it themselves I would tell them where to go because technically in the UK I'm liable!

Thanks loneranger. I appreciate your concern. That Hornet looks like a nice system but twice what I want to spend for my winter car. Howie: Thanks for your input. I don't know who Chis Wallace is or how to contact him or what part of PA he's from. Again, I'd prefer to do it myself. I'm no stranger to automobiles at all. I've just never done an alarm with Autostart. In the US I don't know that giving advice makes you liable. That includes giving bad advice from what I've seen on many forums. ; )

No bypass whatsoever on your car as far as an immobilizer goes. I don't think Subaru even had any alarms at that time.
Door locks will probably involve adding an actuator unless for some reason your Legacy has a keyless entry system. (If your power locks work by just moving the driver's lock, then you'll need an actuator to control it with a remote.)

Now we're talking. Chris thanks for your fine input. We are at opposite ends of the state more or less. I'm from Reading about an hour west of Philly. You're 6 hours away. You are right in that there is no keyless entry for this year subaru. I have to manually move the lock button but then it locks/unlocks all doors. I once had a Nissan 200SX that was the same way and I added Keyless entry using a company called AutoLok (I think that is the spelling). I am uncertain how to integrate their acutuators into my install. Any advice in this area? I may just decide to live without keyless unlock. Also, what is your professional opinion on the two units I listed in my top post?
