Hello guys, I have a problem. I am going to install a UltraStar remote starter and alarm (Manual Trans Model TL2250M) in my 1997 VW bug (mexican). The problem is that the alarm needs a negative input when I pull the hand brake, but my bug does not have a dash light that turns on when the handbrake is used. Does somebody knows if I can adapt a device or something that would send the negative signal when I use the hand brake??? Any help will be greatly appreciated Thanks to all

What you can do is have a togle switch that will be grounded and this will act like your hand brake. If you forget to engage it, the car will not start. ------------- Jeff

You never know, there may be a couple of wires connected to the E-Brake anyway, even though you do not have a dash light. I cant think of what they would be for if not for a light, but it is worth a look see. The toggle switch isnt a bad idea, but if you leave it grounded, then you are losing a source of safety.

Guys, Do you think that a hood pin switch could work??? If I install it below the handbrake where it gets pressed when the ebrake is down. But what signal will it show?? negative or positive... Thanks for you replies!

You could use a mercury switch on your handbrake, when the handbrake is up the mercury will make contact with the wires, and when its down then connection is broken. So one side of the switch is grounded -- And the other side is connected to your (-) input for remote start.

AccordEX, I found a DEI 8160 Mercury Switch for hood, doors and other. Is this the switch you are talking about???? Thanks

I am pretty sure he ment mercury, like liquid metal. The switch would look like the inside of an old thermostate in your house.
the DEI 8160 sounds like what 2k2AccordEX was talking about although I am not sure as I have never used one.
Hope this clears up a small part of your problem.

ok to get a better idea of what we're talking about here's a link to a site that has it: https://www.tune-town.com/Alarms/accessories.htm it is the first item on the list Mercury Switch...Great for hood and tailgate protection. Guys, the Mercury Switch worked perfect I really appreciate your help and sharing your knowledge with me. So guys, the mercury switch also works for ebrakes with no dash light! THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!
