I am attempting to install the 712T in my '08 Tacoma. The red wire from the 712t module harness is to go to +12V constant power input. Ok, no problem there until I notice the installation manual states "Note: always use a fuse within 12 inches of the point you obtain (+)12V. Do not use the fuse in the harness for this purpose. This fuse protects the module itself." The red wire from the module does have an inline fuse. So are they saying the connection should look like MODULE -> SUPPLIED INLINE FUSE -> ANOTHER FUSE -> +12V WIRE? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but there's something about the fuse connected to another fuse that doesn't seem right. I'm new to this and really want to make sure I'm doing it properly. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

use anothe fuse. but, no they do not go right next to each other, the added fuse you put in will be just a few inches from where ever it was you got 12v from. like the manual states, the provided fuse protects the unit, the fuse you add protects the wire. use a fuse of the same size as the other.

Basically, the manually is telling you not to use the wiring that comes with the unit, as a 12v source for anything else.

ok, so do you agree with ckeeler's response as well - to use another fuse within 12inches of my 12v source? Also, what are your thoughts on t-taps. I read where someone said to stay far away from them. I bought cold wrap tape to use over them, or should I be soldering my wires instead? Thanks all

stay away from the t-taps, and yes you should solder all connections possible. if you can't (or wont) do them all, at least solder all the connections at the ignition harness and the one for the tach signal.

I would add forget 12" it should be a maximum of 4" (10cm) from the source*. And yes always solder it's technically a better joint with lower contact resistance. *When we did contract phone installs we were told to mount fuses within 4" of the battery and cable tie them to the main battery leads.
