I installed an viper 800hf and an old dei remote start in my 4runner.  I have 2 problems, the vehicle won't start unless the key is in the ignition and when it starts, it turns of after about 6 seconds.  I found out I need a "transponder" for my first problem.  Any specific reliable one I can get?  For my second problem I got my tach behind the glovebox (black with white wire).  Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. thx

1. Fortin key-override-sl2 would be my favorite. Fortin key-override-all is just as easy to use, but costs a few dollars more because it can do other cars too. idatalink.com also has several good choices.

Avoid the Trilogix XK05, it creates a lot of unnecessary work.

2. I usually get tach at the OBDII diagnostic port right under the driver's dash, in the lower-left corner of the plug.

But also, the remote start should have some t ype of shutdown diagnostics, go there into the programming menu and see what it tells you.

Thanks for all your advice.  The problem with the remote start is that there's no programing, its a DEI 551T from 94' I believe.  The only thing I can see is a possible wrong tach wire.  Before spending the money on the transponder I want to keep the car running.  Thx again.
