I have an Ultra Start 4266M for my manual 300ZX. The installer is about to give up on getting this to work correctly, so I hope someone here can help me. When the installer puts the alarm/remote starter in he has to bypass the clutch switch, which makes the cruise control not work. Also, the hand brake light stays on all the time, and the remote start would try to arm/disarm every time I stepped on the brake pedal. So he went back and changed something, I don't know what, but after it all seemed to work, except the cruise control. As I do a lot of long distance driving I would kind of like this feature to work. So he went back and changed something that made the hand brake light go off when the brake was not in use, but then the cruise control still did not work, and the remote start would arm every time I pulled the hand brake if my foot was still on the brake pedal. So the other day he tried to do something else, and gave it back to me saying it was working. Which it may have, as it did in fact work just fine for a few hours when this was all done the first time. But now it is back to the hand brake light being on all the time, cruise control still does not work, tries to arm/disarm every time I press the brake pedal (quite annoying while driving)and now while my doors will remote unlock, they will not remote lock, and even though the starter does try to arm, when I try to remote start it, the car powers on, but doesn't even try to start, and then powers off. My guess for the last part I would think has something to do with the relay that they had bypassed the clutch with was removed in favor of doing it the way the alarm/remote starter directions say to. Has anyone installed such a system on this year Z before and run into this? Seems to me the 2 big questions are these. How to install and keep my cruise control, and why is the parking brake light always on even with the lever not pulled?

Sounds like you got a mechanic to do electrical work Of course there shouldn't be any relation to the cruise not working unless the isntaller tried to tap into the cruise control module to get his tach signal there. I would ask what wires he hooked up to the cruise control module and your questions will be answered soon there after. Normally I go to the cruise control module for my brake wire ( if the brake wire is hard to get to above the pedal ). The hand brake light being on can be caused by a backfeed from the Ultrastart on the hand brake input wire. Install a diode and this should solve the problem but first disconnect the park brake wire from the Ultrastart and see if the light stays on. ------------- Jeff

Hey, thanks for the response. Yeah, I kind of was thinking the same things about the back feeding and possibly needing a diode. As for the cruise control, it only comes on if the clutch is up, and pressing the clutch down will turn it off. So bypassing the clutch switch seems to make the cars CPU think the clutch is down, and therefore will not allow the cruise to come on, as far as I understand it. Also, I am told from a friend who knows a lot about Z's, that the cruise will also not come on if the Brake light is on. I know from last time the Brake light stayed on, if I cut the wire where they tapped into the line it did go off. So maybe the diode will fix that part of it. And, and the locks do not work at all now. I thought they unlocked but not lock. The door must have already been unlocked when I tried it.

There are two switches on manual transmissions with cruise control. He might have tapped into the wrong switch. The Nissan must use an actuator to control the door lock and unlock functions. The installer should have installed 2 relays and an actuator in either the driver or passengerside door. Do you know if he did ?

I do not know what switch he tapped on the trans. The only switch that I personally know of on the trans is for the reverse lights, as I have had to change it myself. On this model Z there are 2 clutch switches. One is for the Cruise, one is for the Safety switch. So it won't start with out the clutch pressed, and the cruise will not work while the clutch is pressed. As for the door locks, the Z uses some type of relay that when I lock or unlock the driver side door, the passenger side door will lock or unlock. There is an actuator on the driver side door. That part of the remote system worked just fine before he went and changed it all to "technically how it should have been done by the book" instead of how "we" do it. Makes no sense to me though as this place put in all in to start with. But I am under the impression that he thinks there is only one clutch switch.

Here's the way I did this on my 350Z (I know it's not the same car, but maybe the idea can be utilized): my clutch switch engages (completes a circuit) when the clutch is pushed to the floor, so I tapped both of the wires on that switch and ran them into a relay that is activated by the 'Status' output of my remote start (it gives a ground signal right before and during the remote start sequence). The relay basically connects the 2 wires from the clutch switch (completing the circuit), but only during the remote start sequence. Doing this (instead of simply bypassing your clutch switch completely) might fix your cruise control issue. I'm not familiar with your alarm, so I'm not sure which wire (if you have a comparable wire) would be the Status output.
