Has anyone rigged up a simple solenoid that will lock the hood safety latch in place when the alarm is triggered?

I suggest a mechanical hood lock. Directed Electronics had one years ago but still might be available 565T or 566T or 567T. It had a T handle inside the vehicle with a key lock. Electronic hood lock can fail or will not unlatch with a dead battery (and guess where the battery is).

I was thinking of something a bit more simple. Just a solenoid that pushes a rod through a hole or just against the latch and retracts with with no power.

A solenoid without power might be a challenge to find. ------------- Prepare your future. It wasn't the lack of stones that killed the stone age.

push-type, spring-return solenoid.

That being the case, it would be drawing power the whole time your system was armed. You would find yourself with a dead battery all the time.

Is there a way to have it activated only when the alarm is triggered??

Well, what if the alarm was triggered because the hood opened? Honestly if someone really wants to get under your hood, they could easily cut the wires to such a device. Whats under your hood your so worried about anyway?

Really? What good is an alarm if someone can disable the siren in a few short seconds. I was thinking this could be an altertantive to a backup battery. Plus it could throw someone off their corse of action if they end up frustrated because they can't get the safety latch to move.

I guess, just it seems more trouble than it's worth. By all means try it. Id like to see how you make it work.

You should be able to run the solenoid off the siren output. It may be beneficial to include a short time delay (you will need a relay to drive the solenoid anyway). That way it won't energize when the system chirps. ------------- Kevin Pierson
