how do i get a new transponder or a

new apparatus?

Hope this is the correct forum for this post. i live in Mexico and work in the U.S. and a couple of years ago had an immobilizer put into our 96 Toyota Corolla. It still works great but one of the transponders has broken and i know that if i don't get a backup one i'm going to be in trouble.

i don't know the brand or model. The transponder itself has no markings and the little tag that comes with it only says "Retain tag. See owners manual." i don't know where to look for the ?? module or whatever in the engine compartment so i could locate the brand and model.

So, i've got a couple of questions:

Is there any way of locating this thing?
Even if i locate it, could i get another transponder made for it?

i've been all over Google for the past several days and it seems like the only people who sell these things -- car immobilizers -- are the Chinese... from China! Does anyone sell them in the U.S.? Have they got maybe a webpage or something?

You have to folow the wiring back from the receiver where you place the transponder, that or there will be a "necklace" around your ignition switch, the CPU will be under the dash, or in centre console. It will be wired as follows, 12v+ perm, 12v+ ign 1 or 2 grounds and the relevant part;  starter break and either ign or fuel pump break, most likely the cuts will be at the ignition switch lead. It usually takes me about 10 mins. to remove and make good.  As far as I know, most of these come from Europe, especially if all the leads are black, DEI markets a couple over here but I don't know if they are sold in North America.

Thanks, HowieII for such a fast reply! Really appreciate it. i guess i'm going to have to wait a while to get under the dash and try to follow the leads to the CPU because it's a little warm these days... we're getting up close to 115 F.

What do you think the chances are of getting another dongle? i don't think transponder is the right word for it... it's just a piece of clear plastic with what appears to be a wire coil inside -- no battery. The old one's coil connection broke -- it began to rattle around in the container.

Pleasure, I only do call-outs in the UK and Continental Europe, I only went as far as Houston when I lived in Florida, any way, patience,  carefully follow the wiring trail from whatever you can see, LED etc.?  There may be something written on the CPU, if you can't find any man. names, at least you will be able to replace with another if necc.

howie II, thanks again for responding! i'll try following the wiring. If i can't get someone here to make a new dongle, maybe at least i can find/purchase another CPU or get the Manual to get out of this mess.

i've noticed a couple of units for sale on EBay for about what i paid for this unit, which was about $75 + $10 for installation. After i check tomorrow i'll know better which way to go i guess.

Just thought i'd stop back and report... i stopped in at one of the two places that have auto alarms in Calexico, Ca. on the way home and the brother of the owner of one of them said that he has the dongles and the means to copy mine and we set up an appt. for tomorrow P.M. It'll "only" cost some $25 U.S. which is probably as inexpensive as i'm gonna find it.

He also told me the name of the equipment, but i'm getting you-know-what and have forgotten it. i think he said Clifford and tomorrow i want to see if i can get the model number and then perhaps go on-line and get the manual or whatever's available.

Thanks again for all your help and patience. i'm really glad that i didn't have to get under the dash in this heat -- it's about 46C today with lots of humidity -- ug.
