Subject: multitester that will store peak values

Hi,

I'm installing an alarm system and many times the voltages or currents I need to measure are pulses that occur in fractions of a second.

Does anyone know of an affordable (less than $100) multitester / VOM that will store the peak voltages or currents received by the tester and allow you to display those values (instead of trying to watch the tester and hopefully see the high value as it flashes by quickly)?

thanks

That's been discontinued Howie. Can't find a Radio Shack that has one anymore.

Just an FYI

Well,
I have to reverse. I called a different Radio Shack looking for another VOM that would do that and they gave me different info so I went there and they had one....but, it was their only one.

Regardless I got one and your post was very useful.

thx

Yes agreed but a lot more expensive, I use a non-autoranging non calibrated DMM with peak hold,  20amps current measurement and trace buzzer for £30, = $45. I agree I could quadruple that for a decent one but it's adequate for field use, considering it gets slung in the trunk of my car 3 times a day.

The autoranging is the key thing to disable when dealing with quick signals.  My Fluke meters won't read fast pulses unless I disable the auto ranging feature.  My Craftsman meters won't read the pulses at all.

It's important to not only have a meter that stores peak values but is fast enough to catch those values!

The One I got today from Radio Shack was about $70 (USD) or about 35 british pounds (I think?)

Anyway, it has everything I need and more and I think it was a good investment as I use VOMS constantly, just never had a fluke or one with data store Min/Max capability.

I particularly like the way it uses ranges. MUCH better than most of other VOMS.

I before E except after C!!!!

You're getting closer though.

I currently only have the three Flukes - a 189 data logging meter, a 787 process meter, and the classic 87-V general purpose meter.  The 87-V actually belongs to my employer, but it stays with me at all times so I gotta count it!

OOPS again I wrote it correctly, then thought it didn't look right, I'll just refer to KP as Kenneth Pearson in future. Mind you my name is Howard, number of people who called me Harold when I was a kid, they usually ended up with a fist sandwich.

Great, all we need KTM to join in. Go back to work Gary, your holiday's over and happy Birthday. I was winding you up Kevin, not insulting you or dad, poor old Mr Aviator, must be wondering what's going on here.

OK do you want to join KTM, t&t Chris Wallace and Mr. I on our rounds of bad taste emails?  Jokes aside I'm intrigued by our similarities in tools and methods, I suppose there's often only one right way.

As a sidebar if we get yet another LAM asking for brake wire colours on a car I'm going to scream!
