2004 Cadillac CTS Passkey Bypass

I would like to know if you can use a bypass (independantly) to cover up an intermitant fault in the passkey III system on a 2004 Cadillac CTS. I have to reset the ign. key every 3-5 days. Part or product numbers would be very helpful. The car does not have an aftermarket alarm or remote start.

I could imagine a way, but I've never tried it:

1. Buy and install any of the databus bypass modules on the market. Trilogix XK01 is the first to come to mind, but there are others.

(If you're new to all this, go to www.xpressdownload.com and download the manual for the XK01 so you have an idea what the rest is about.)

2. Install your module, connecting power, ground, and data to the car's OBDII port. (Ignore the module's doorlock and trunk inputs since you don't even have a remote starter.)

3. Program the module according to the instructions, as if you were installing a remote starter.

4. Disconnect the PK3 wiring plugs at the car's key cylinder. You don't want the car to EVER "see" the actual transponder key that you're putting into the ignition switch. (Theoretically, you could now just get regular non-chip keys from the hardware store and they should work.)

5. At the car's ignition switch, find the light green Key Sense wire.......shows a ground whenever you insert the key.

Connect the brown "ground-when-running" from the XK01, to the keysense wire on the car.

(Now, whenever you insert a key in the ignition, the XK01 will turn on, thinking you are about to remote start the car.......you're actually going to be starting it with the key, but the XK01 won't "know" this.)

Result: Car's factory PK3 stuff at the ignittion switch is disabled. Whenever you insert the key, the XK01 (or whatever other module you choose) turns off the car's PK3, allowing it to start.

ONE BIG, REALLY BIG CATCH: Almost all these modules lose programming when they lose power.

If your car's battery should ever fail, you'd be kinda screwed..........although you could always carry a small tool kit with you, allowing you to drop the dash, plug the original PK3 back in, and unplug the XK01 in case of emergency.
