Hello, I just had an Avital 4103 remote start installed on a 2009 Cobalt and the installer tells me the rear defroster cannot be connected without an additional relay and that the remote trunk release feature will then be sacrificed  Hope someone can confirm this is incorrect and tell us it's done.  thanks

Your installer is mistaken. Read on...

You can view the Avital's manual here. On page 48 is half of the wiring pinout.

I can't think of any reason why your installer would have used something other than the "RED / White (-) 200ma channel 2" output for the trunk release, since it's designed primarily as a trunk release output.

For the rear window defogger, he'd use the "Blue/White 2nd status output/defogger" wire. This could be connected in one of 3 ways:

1. Directly to a wire from the defogger switch which goes to ground momentarily when the switch is pressed.

2. Directly to a wire from the climate control panel(if the defogger switch is integrated into it) or the defogger relay which activates the relay and stays at ground for as long as the defogger's active.

3. To an add-on relay which powers the high current wire going to the defogger grid itself.

Information on programming the defogger output wire(Menu 2, Option 8) is found from pages 32 to 40 of the PDF manual. For method 1 of connection that I've just stated, program the output to "pulsed". For methods 2 or 3 program it to "latched".

Thanks, this is exactly what I thought since I had already seen the wiring diagram and saw separate connections for the trunk release the the rear defroster..  I expected that they would have hooked this up, why have the remote start if you can't melt the ice?

Honestly I don't know anyone who does it unless asked, for a couple reasons.

First, many remote starts don't have the convenient dedicated defroster output that the Avital has.

Second, and feel free to check out the "Vehicle Wiring" link to see for yourself what I mean, unless the shop is paying big $$$ for ALLDATA or Mitchell they don't have a wire color or location for the defroster. So the installer has to figure the circuit out on his own, which takes time. I've done enough defroster hookups that it's not hard but I usually charge extra to make up for the time.

chriswallace187,

I showed my installer your answer and I think they will try your #1 solution for me.

NEW QUESTION:  I want the door locks to auto-lock / unlock  with the ignition switch, they tried to program it to do that and didn't get it to work yet, any ideas on that?

I think they tried that, should have mentioned that they added the power door locks, (car did not have factory power door locks).  The locks do work with the avital remote though so would that any difference?

the locks would have to be tied into the avital system    if they are add on there should be 2 relays they can tie into for te locks to work

The avital remote does lock and unlock the doors including the horn beeps so the locks must be hooked up (maybe incorrectly ?).  Just didn't want to hear that only factory door locks would be able to do the auto  ignition locking.

if the locks work with the remote then they should be able to change those settings to make it do what you want

Update:  My installer added a relay to make the rear defroster come on with the remote start  and it works but only a slight issue is that it now needs to be turned off manually.

One Remaining issue is the auto door lock with ignition feature I want.  the installers say my 2009 Cobalt does not have an ignition wire to connect to the Avital remote start, they say it is all done by resistance, I don't totally understand this, and hope someone has a solution?

The ignition switch on the Cobalt (and other late model GMs) does use resistance for the key sense, start, and some ignition circuits.

Normally I'll use a bypass module that connects to the resistance wire, but I'll also connect the conventional ignition/accessory wire from the switch.

It may be possible that they've installed the remote starter using the resistance wire alone. I've heard of late-model Malibus starting and running without power to the ignition switch, and the only thing abnormal was that the gauges didn't work. There's no reason to think that the same couldn't be done on a Cobalt.

Anyway, if the shop hasn't done it yet, have them connect to the yellow wire from the ignition switch, and program ignition controlled locking on. That will give you the ignition controlled door lock option you want.
