I just got a new 98 silverado that had a remote starter installed. Unfortunately the guy I bought it from didn't have the remote transmitters and knew nothing about the unit. I took it to a local auto audio/video shop but there were no markings anywhere or FCC ID on the unit under the dash. They said there was little they could do to help me in terms of getting a transmitter to work with it. Here's my question:

If I went and bought a new unit what are the odds of the existing plugs matching up and simply plugging right into the new unit? Or do i have a better option? Thanks.

about .1%

Buy a new unit. Remove old unit. Trace wires back where they are connected and remove them. Install new unit. You can probably reuse the bypass module they used for the Passlock II.

If you don't have the tools to install it yourself, have a new one put in at a shop.

The one thing you have going for you though is it looks like the back of the unit has a wire guide on it (identifying what each wire does). That should make it fairly easy to install a new unit - just match up the wires and splice away.

Yea, the back of the unit does have a pretty detailed wire guide. SO assuming it's correct and the original install put the correct wires in the right places, it should be some pretty simple cutting and splicing, correct?

I haven't done much research of new units, so hopefully all the necessary wires have already been pulled.

Looks like a TRC unit to me. But they are garbage, so your best bet is to slice a new RS in.

I 2nd this post...I have been lazy in the past and unplugged old units and wired new units to the wiring...Have done it a few times...But some of them had to come back for wiring connection issues...(original wires were not connected very well...)...So as worm said trace wires up...If they appear to be a good connection......Make your decision at that point whether to re-use old wiring or remove it...But as stated the wires are already labeled and found...Cant get much easier either way you go...! And pay attention to polarity(like - parking lights and such...!) Just a 2nd thought here...Does the truck have factory keyless...And in the wire descriptions...is there a wire that says something like - instant start... Maybe if this wire is available, we can activate the remote start with a relay or a trigger...?? and then nevermind the remote or replacement!
