What is the best wire to use for the tach signal? everything I've tried has been 12-14v not the 1-6 like viper wants.

Hows it goin... Try using the light blue wire (not the white wire) at any ignition coil or coil pack.  If your explorer is a sport TRAC then use the tan / YELLOW wire at the PCM located on the passenger side firewall under the hood.

you can use any uncommon wire at the fuel injectors also
