Hey I need to install a remote start on a car with a Viper alarm. The remote start I have is a Ultra Start 1280 xr-pro, the car is a 2002 Toyota Highlander. I am not sure at the moment what model Viper alarm is installed in the car but it has a 2 button remote(if that helps at all).
Is it possible to add this remote start to that alarm and use the remote start's remotes to work the alarm as well? Or will I need to use the Viper's remote to engage the remote start?
Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
This should be simple. First, the alarm will have to have a output that is not used (trunk output) or a aux channel. Next, the ultra start will have to have a remote start activation input. The only other thing to consider is weather or not the range on the alarm is sufficient because generally alarms are not designed to have extended range like remote starts are. It probably is not possible to use the remote starts remotes to control the alarm. Good luck.
Thanks beegbie.
The remote start I want to install has a factory alarm arm/disarm feature. Can that be used to arm/disarm the Viper(aftermarket) alarm?
No, because I doubt your alarm has alarm and disarm inputs....very rare. Your best bet, as mentioned before, is to use the viper to trigger a remote start. You will most likely need to buy a module to bypass the factory immobilzer on that vehicle.
Nope. The factory alarm arm and disarm provides a -pulse when locking and unlocking with the remote start. The viper will not have a -input to arm and disarm. It probably only arms and disarms with the transmitter.
Speaking of the factory immobilizer...how do I know if this car has one? It was purchased used and already had the Viper alarm installed so I don't know if it has a factory alarm/immobilizer option installed. I know there was an incident when the alarm freaked out and would not allow us to start the car but I don't know if that is something caused by the Viper or the factory system. This happened several months ago so I don't remember what the circumstances were when it freaked out on us.
I am wondering if I should remove the Viper alarm and use it in a second vehicle and use the factory alarm(if it has one) and the Ultra Start remote start with it.
Are factory alarms even worth considering as decent protection against theft/breakin? If not, what makes them inferior to the basic Viper that's already in there?
