Hello,

This is my first post, so I hope I don't break any of the rules.   I have a 1999 Ford F250 Super Duty truck that I had an AutoMate AM2 keyless entry system installed on back in Dec. of 1998.   It has worked well the past 11 years and I have no complaints. However, the company that sold and installed it for me is now gone out of business.   According to the paperwork, this AutoMate AM2 system was made by DEI. One of my remotes stopped working.   It still lights up when you push either of the buttons, but it doesn't seem to work the system.   So, I am down to one working remote and that concerns me.   Unlike the newer AM2 that I have seen advertised on the web, this one only has a two buttom remote.   It is black with two oval shaped buttons on the front.   The buttons are marked I and II. There is a red light between them.   The remote uses a barrel shaped battery, so it's larger down at the bottom.   This system is from 1998. You push button I to lock all the doors and button II to unlock everything.   The horn chirps once for lock and twice for unlock.   That's all I need it to do and it still seems to do that very well.   Does anyone know where I can get an extra remote transmitter (or maybe even two of them).   And, once I get it, how do I program it?? I looked through the original instructions that came with the system and it doesn't say anything about how to get or program a new remote.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bryan Ray (Richmond, VA)

Does the remote have a part number on it? Any numbers at all etched in the remote?

The remote lookup tool showed the 473A but that is a GREEN LED remote, not RED. With DEI the color of the LED is typically what indicates which remotes will and will not work. I am thinking it is a 491T remote but I can't find anything to back this thought up.

Thanks for your help with my remote transmitter problem.   Here is exactly what is on the back of the transmitter:

DEI (in large letters.....logo like)

Des. 347,190

800-477-1372 (I guess that's a phone number)

RPN491
68 Billion
Rolling Codes

FCC ID: EZSDEI490

That's all I can find and the led light (when you push the button) is red.

I can find remotes on ebay and other places that look like this one and some that even have the same numbers, but no where can I find the directions on how to program it to work with my specific system.   I have a 25 year old son that has a Mitsubishi Galant and I just got a couple of new remotes for him off of ebay and it was fairly easy to do a Google search and find several places that had the instructions right on line for how to program the new remote and it worked just great.   But, I can't seem to find anything that even remotely sounds like the programming instructions for this old Automate AM2 system.   So, finding the correct remote transmitter is probably the easier part of the problem.   Finding the instructions to make it work on my existing system may be the harder part.   I even still have the original owners manual and there is nothing in there at all about programming remotes. I hate to have to tear out a perfectly good, fully functional keyless entry system just because I can't get a replacement remote to work.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bryan

RPN491 is the "Remote Part Number 491". The 491T to be exact. From what I have read they no longer offer this remote as it has been replaced by a four button version, the 485M. I would suggest buying from a retailer that includes programming instructions and guarantees the remote will work with your system. Google came up with several that do just that.

Once again, thanks.   I know this is probably a stupid question, but is this an Automate only kind of part or is this transmitter somewhat generic in nature?   In other words, is this an Automate 491T or just anyone's 491T? When I go to one of these remote transmitter reseller sites, do I tell them just the model number or the manufacturer as well?   And, just for the record.....is Automate (DEI) still in business and could I get this directly from them for about the same price?

Thanks

Bryan

P.S. - what search criteria did you use in Google?
