what is speed sense used for?  is this used instead of the tach wire? thanks for the advise.

it cannot be used in place of a tach as far I'm aware of. The only time I've hooked up speed sense is when isntalling indash gps units.

Speed sense is for gps units.

And almost all newer gps units do not require a connection to the speed sense wire. It's also used in aftermarket cruise controls.
