Hey guys,

*Remember, I'm new* :)

Have a customer who came in w/ a 2001 Dodge Intrepid fed up with his security system. I think "no big deal, I'll just disconnect it" (customer says he could care less about keyless entry at this point).

Disconnected vehicle and car doesn't start! Ahh! I've got an install manual so that I can put the wires back in place where they connected to, but I'm curious, how can I disconnect his system so that he's still able to start car?

I'm completely aware of valet mode, and he knows how to do that, but he said every once in a while he still gets interferrence and it'll arm his car so it won't start.

Any suggestions?

With the help of my father in law, I figured out the issue. Since the starter key (WHITE/ red) and starter motor (white) wires were disconnected, the open circuit prevented the vehicle from starting (this was a "here's your sign" moment for me). :) Put a butt connector on the ends to connect them together and voila!

That's OK if you're new....looks like you even figured it out on your own; you're learning quickly!

As you probably have figured out by now, for a basic installation, usually only the car's starter wire gets cut and interrupted. With few exceptions, the other connections (locks, brake, lights, et cetera) will just have a straight connection from the alarm to the car, so unplugging the alarm doesn't hurt these connections on the car at all.

You might occasionally run into a car where someone's done an ignition kill or fuel pump kill. Or 5-wire "reversing polarity" doorlocks where they have to cut the wires. Or on many newer Nissans with immobilizers, the bypass module interrupts the factory security LED in the dashboard.
