I know you can get can hi/low, ground, ignition and 12v at the obd plug for sure. i have tried getting tach a few times at the OBD2 plug Pin 9 for tach. I have only used it on some cars. and found it to be sucessful. ------------- Ted

If I had to take a rough guess, I'd say you can find the tach wire in the OBDII plug in around 75% of Toyotas from 2002 to present, and just about never in the older models.
It sometimes depends on the engine size. For example, some of the 2002-2006 4-cylinder Camrys had tach at the OBDII, but never on the V6 model.
I'm pretty sure that on Toyota, if there is a wire at Pin 9 in the OBDII, it'll always be tach...if no wire is present, you have to get tach elsewhere in the car.
There's almost no Toyota I can think of that doesn't have tach available somewhere in the passenger compartment---if you have a question about a specific model, just let me know and I'll try to help.

On just about all the Lexus models,it's a black with silver dots standing away from the other leads, strangely enough from the wire side the set up looks exactly like a late BMW. On an older GS owned by a US air force gentleman based in England (at least I got to play with an F15), there's a control box on the side of the engine bay about the size of two cig packs. Open it up, there's some excess BLACK/ red wiring. That's the tach wire.

An easy way to tell, the two rows on the OBD plug, the row on the shorter side of plug, on the end all by itself. If it isn't it ain't there...

This maybe a dumb question, but if the vehicle is equipped with a tachometer, shouldn't there be a tachometer wire available under the dash? My Fusion wiring sheet says to use a fuel injector. I've read some posts stating that using an fuel injector wire can sometimes cause issues with the engine. I've got a tach, so I assumed there was a wire to splice into. Any explanations?

if you have a tach, there is a tach wire. SOmetimes it can be a PITA to get to, as some are at the cluster or in a loom hidden at the back of a glovebox. i have used tach and injectors, but never found a problem so far. ------------- Ted

------------- If i Can't Install it I Don't need it Joe

Yes fine go to the rev counter but oops it's a late Euro car, there are 4 wires going into the cluster, all data.
Yes Ted, I've had running (mainly lumpy idle and stalling out) problems with VW and Vauxhall (Euro GM) which have identical (Bosch) ignition systems after injection wire tapping. The answer there is to use what I think is called a 454t inductive tach generator. Not invasive so nothing is harmed.
