Just a simple question. Which alarm should I install in this vehicle? I know a lot of you will think, why put an alarm in that?? Simple, it's a desirable vehicle that's easy to steal.

I'm planning on installing this myself and would like a 2-way system with remote start (manual transmission). The only other alarm I've installed is a compustar 9000AS on a '91 BMW 325ix. I'd consider another compustar because of the familiarity, but I'd like to consider newer options as well. Two obvious options are the viper 5901 and matrix 50.7x (why pay hundreds more for an oled screen???) Any strong recommendations for those, or maybe a suggestion to steer away for those??

My needs are a bit out of the ordinary in that I plan on living in this for a few months at a time with my wife and would like security at night while I'm sleeping in it. I'm going to have TONS of stuff in this ride, so I'd like a top end system. I don't have a lot of security system knowledge, but I'm very comfortable with electrical/soldering.

Pretty straight forward, too early for nasties like by-passes and CAN, stick with a non-oled Compustar, less problems. Hundreds more? Read the loads and loads of posts here on problems with Clifford/Viper systems with the CPUs and the remotes. Frankly if I was living in it I'd go for a large German Shepherd rather than an alarm.

So Howie, you say stick with Compustar for the van.  I probably should considering I've had close to zero problems with it since I installed a couple years ago.

t&t - What's the x2 w/ Howard??

And I'm not sure a large german shepard would get along well with my goldendoodle.  HAHA! posted_image

I did "acquire" an 8 month old male recently but I forgot, the last time I did this was 30 years ago and he wore me down unfortunately he was potty trained but not people trained, I live on my own and couldn't devote enough time and strength to make him realise who was the alpha male! All my food + his, plus my Sky + (Sat +TiVO in one box) remote, + my driver's seat belt, etc. etc. Ah well he was beautiful....

If you go by the posts on this site, Compustar, Zenesis, Avox/Code all APPEAR more reliable than DEI. I don't know if this sis statistically correct because I have a feeling DEI sells in much higher volume. I don't know the relevant sales figures for each.

I think I'll go with another compustar for familiarity / reliability sake.  I did have a bad compustar brain in my first install, but after the replacement everything has worked wonderfully.

Thanks for your help!!  I might pick your brain again when the actual install happens.

DEI probably sells more, but they make up for it by returned brains. I have done DEI starters a few times, and this is the second encounter i had that had serious problems.

By all means ask, I'm obviously only familiar with right/hand drive but I think that vintage L/H/D was just a mirror image. Most of what you want except for door triggers and siren mounting is centred between steering column and fuse box. If it has central locking it will probably be of the single point type and will need an actuator in the driver's door. To test see if you can lock all of the doors with key in the front passenger door.

It's wired for power locks. I also just found the original window sticker and it had power locks installed from dealer. I opened the door panels and the actuators are gone. I bought a couple aftermarker actuators and plan on installing them in the front doors. The slider and rear hatch still have the original actuators. I believe the system works with the front doors as masters and the slider and rear as slaves. Hopefully I can just wire the new actuators in the front and the slider and rear will work.

I would like to do driver's priority unlock. Any tips to make this easier. I'm sure I can figure it out, but suggestions are welcome.

Don't wire the front passenger door as a master, 2 wire only or you will never get the locks to synch. Buy a 2 motor set with wiring and relay, then tap the motor wires from the side and rear to the motor outputs from this relay. Only use a door lock specific relay module. You will need a second relay for priority unlock.

Hey howie....is there any diagram for this van's type of door locks that shows how to wire for priority driver's unlock??? It's 4 wire, and that's about all I know. I think I'm going to abandon most of the front doors wiring and run new wires for my aftermarket actuators. I could do a bunch of trial and error, but I'm sure you know something to save me time.
