I am new to the forums and not sure who to ask for help on this.
I have the Avantguard 3 since 1997 and drove my car daily until about 6 months ago.
I have always had battery problems, weak battery and replaced it several times. I have always thought it was other things that kept having a draw on the battery.
But since I have let the car sit now and not driving it all the time, I found the culprit of my battery problems. When I disconnect the battery(power to the alarm), I will hear relays click from the Avantguard 3 brain. Meaning that the relays are powered on all the time. (Even when not armed) Let me say that I have not had problems with the alarm all this time and I the install on this alarm myself.
Does anybody have a fix or found a solution to this? Or Is this normal for the Avantguard series alarm. For the time being I have disconnected the power to the alarm everytime I park for 2 days or more, if not the alarm will drain the battery down to a state of hard starting or not starting at all.
BTW, I have also the Clifford backup battery installed (The big Panasonic battery approx 3"X3.5"X6.25") and it has never held a charge over 12 volts(even when new). It usually reads 11.80-11.88. , I cant seem to find this backup battery anymore, just the DEI battery.
What you have to do is isolate the relays that are being triggered and see what you did. There may be wires that were supposed to be IGN wires but you used constant power instead, and this would draw power to these relays. We sell slim Panasonic batteries that are sealed and dry cells as back up batteries if your interested.
