What could I have done wrong?I am hooking up a Vampire combo on my 85 Thunderbird and it will crank with the remote but will not crank with the key.I have the tach? wire connected to the neg. side of the coil

  When I try it with the key,It will turn over and try to run momentarily then cut off

The car did not come with factory alarm or keyless entry

It sounds like what you are trying to say is it will start with the remote but will only crank with the key? If you think it has something to do with the tach wire then try disconnecting the tach wire and see if it will run with the key. Also does your alarm have an ingition kill option that you installed?

Duh

 It was just a loose conection at the ignition harness
