seeking advice on a basic keyless entry.

I have a 1985 Dodge W350 Crew Cab pickup that I am ready to install a keyless entry in. This vehicle has standard manual locks currently, so I will need a kit that has 4 actuators. I googled around on this site and several online stores, the choices are pretty overwhelming. I will be doing the install, I have above average skills and the tools, just need advice on a quality basic keyless entry.

I installed Omega door lock actuators on my truck about 9 months ago - so far no problems.  Not quite as "heavy duty" as the DEI actuators I've installed in the past but quite a bit cheaper.

My favorite is the Audiovox PROPDL4B.

It comes with a control brain, four actuators, brackets and clamps and such, and a wiring harness.

The two front actuators have five wires, and the rears have two wires.

The purpose of the five-wire actuators is that if you lock (or unlock) one of the front doors by hand (or by key from outside) the other three doors will follow.

As far as the wiring, all you'd need to do is find constant and ground, and everything else is already prepared for you.

The unit also has two extra wires for lock/unlock inputs. You can connect these to the outputs of an alarm, remote starter, or keyless entry unit, so you'll have a remote to lock/unlock the doors as well. (You can pretty much buy whatever brand of alarm/keyless you want; doesn't have to be Audiovox.)

You could just buy four two-wire actuators and figure out how to wire up everything yourself.......but by the time you buy the wire, two relays, fuse holder.....the kit is going to be cheaper. Plus the 5-wire feature in the front is very nice.

The good is that it already comes with a keyless entry unit and two remotes.

The bad is that it's an unknown product shipped from China and you can be pretty sure you'll have no tech support, no warranty, and no easy way to buy replacement remotes.

The PROPDL4B plus a basic name-brand keyless entry unit would probably cost about double of that piece from China, but you should be able to buy with a warranty, and if you get stuck on something there's almost someone here who can help.

That part from China sure has an attractive price, and I'm even a little tempted to try one myself. But do keep in that if you run into any trouble getting it to work, it's unlikely any forum member will have any experience with it to offer ideas.

Chris - keep in mind that shipping from China is at least $47 - that takes you up to the $60 price range for something that is probably of inferior quality.  You could probably find something better on an auction website!

It was a bit more ($60 + $45 for shipping) but it is fully passive and has a full alarm system built in.  I've got my fingers crossed that it will work reliably!

I ran across this bundle while looking around, I saved it and I keep going back to it. It fits my need, it is basic and the lock actuators seem to be very high quality. I didn't want an alarm just a keyless entry, but the price seems really reasonable for this system. I think if I have it I will use it.....

That looks pretty interesting.

I'm not familiar with that brand of actuator, but they do look well-made in the photo, and the two front actuators are the "5-wire" style. (I think their site did a better job of explaining the "central locking" feature than I did.)

I only see three disadvantages:

1. You said you didn't want an alarm. Although, you can always just install the whole setup and then put the alarm in valet mode.

2. That alarm has the inconvenient (and, in my opinion, antiquated) single button for both lock and unlock.

3. It seems a little expensive. You could get an Avital 2101L keyless-only for $45 shipped on eBay, and a PROPDL4B for $76 shipped.

$121 total, and you'd have dedicated lock and unlock buttons, and avoid the alarm that you don't want.

(The keyless-only unit should still have outputs for light flash, horn honk, LED, and even starter kill, should you decide to add these features later on.)
