Just trying to install a viper 5901 into my 08 Scion Xb, but the remote start doesn't seem to want to work for me.

i didn't want the lights to flash, so i didn't hook up the parking light wire, but i'm getting 7 relay clicks indicating the neutral start isn't grounded.

It's grounded, and the switch is on, but i still got nothing, after trying different grounds, trying to bypass the switch with an alligator clip, etc....

Anything that i might've missed out on? i'm pretty sure I've got the right ends of the ignition wire cut because the car is still starting with the key when the alarm is off, and the ignition wire is the only grey one on the harness (via 3 different sources)

I've heard on the forum of someone having an issue with one right out of the box, but didn't know how common it was for them to be DOA as far as remote start.

If it does seem to be a defective unit, any suggestions as to replacing it? I know Viper probably will have nothing to do with me since I'm not an authorized installer, but I'm afraid of going back to the online retailer i got it from-- especially if they're going to ask me for the harnesses that I've already spent the time to put into place.

I've done a ton of radio installs and two 791 xv's, so i've got a little experience with it, but im discouraged with the possibility of a defective unit

make sure its in automatic mode and not manual and make sure that extra neutral safety toggle siwtch is plugged in ALONG with the BLACK/ white wire grounded.

im sorry-- automatic mode?

the switch doesnt do anything either way-- i tried bypassing it with the alligator clip just to check for a faulty mechanism.

you can program it with the remotes.

the unit is defaulted for manual tranny, you need to switch it to auto and have the nss plugged in and grounded.

in other words, read the manual

alright, so i got the manual switched to automatic, but it appears things still arent working.

the dash doesnt even light up during the process.

One source on THIS site says that it's one power, one ignition wire.
Another, as well as scionlife.com says its 2 and 2-- which checks out with what i can tell via test light.

How would i go about wiring this? will i need to use additional relays for a second start/ignition wire?

I have it listed as 2 ignitions and 2 start wires.

ign 1 - grey pin 6
ign 2 - white pin 4
start 1 - white pin8
start 2 - white pin 1

you will need a relay for any addition start/ign

85 - ign or start (-) from unit
86 - constant 12v
87 - constant 12v
30 - to ign or start wire on car.

but are there any additional wires on the module that i may be missing to use as a second start/igntion wire?

i would think that the dash would light up-- i jumped a test 12v+ to the ignition wire i have hooked up to the pink wire and it lit right up

Im sure the 5901 alarm system is fine it sounds like you have some wiring problems, but before you go any further I would read the install manual several times, get a better understanding for the programing options, like the tach settings, the crank time settings, trany settings, hood pin settings, the flex relay settings..https://www.directeddealers.com/manuals/IG/Viper/N5702V_2008_08web.pdf

you will use the ign 1 output.

use the flex relay as your additional ignition wire output.

flex relay 87 input - constant 12v
flex relay 30 output - to ignition 2

Did you hook up the hood pin switch? Is it showing an open circuit when the hood is closed?

Also, the dash lights won't light up since you said you do not have the parking lights hooked up.

the unit has 4 constant 12v inputs.

3 are on the larger gauge harness, and one on the long connectors. make sure you power up all 4.

i did hook up the hood pin switch, and just to rule it out as a culprit, i disconnected it when doing the trial and error.

i went back and hooked up the parking lights, and ceased to get the same error flashes ever since i put it in "automatic mode"-- the dash lighting up i was referring to was the regular occurrence of the gauge cluster lighting up as the ignition is turned over, not of the parking lights.

i was able to replicate it lighting up by jumping a 12v direct to the ignition wire and all the needles set and the cluster lit up.

im still a little fuzzy on the flex-relay thing and the way this is supposed to be wired, but ill give it another shot tomorrow.

the last installs i did were the 791xv's which predated the flex relay system, and i think the cars had only one ignition and one starter wire-- or were simple enough for me to be able to figure out on my own.... this 2 start, 2 ign w flex relay has thrown me for a loop!

i know it's not an immobilizer issue or anything though-- i cut myself a spare and the brass key turned the engine over just fine.

as mentioned you have 2 starts and 2 ignitions.

to deal with ignition first, take the first ign output and connect to ign 1
use the flex relay which will help you for ignition 2. Flex input to constant 12v, flex output to ignition 2.

connect the start wire to the car, using a relay and the 200ma starter output (-) of the unit, wire to a relay.
85 - 200ma start output from unit
86 - constant 12v
87 - constant 12v
30 - to second start wire.

just trying to clarify, because half of the issue i was having was not clearly understanding what connections via the flex relay i needed to make to what.

as it is, i have (in color and harness number):

1.Pink to ignition
4.Violet to the starter output
5.Green to the starter input

so i need to go
2.RED / white to constant 12v
6.Red to constant 12v
7.Pink/White to ignition 2

and then the relay for the second starter?

sorry-- and i forgot to add

9. RED / black to constant 12v

?

yes that is correct. Everything looks good. now just use the relay for the second start.
