removing remote start shutdown

Hi everyone,

I'm really sorry for this inexperienced question but I can't find a how-to guide anywhere. I have a 2010 Subaru Legacy with a factory installed remote start. My question is how do I disable the open door shutdown. I hate having to re-start my engine the second I get into my car(it can't be good for the engine either).

I already found the wiring guide. I just don't know where to look or what to do. Do I ground the wires or set them to 5V? Also does anyone know the warranty implications for modding the remote start?

Is it truely a Factory Remote Start?  I believe they are one button remotes. 

Or is it a dealer installed aftermarket remote start?  ( Is there a brand name on the remote? )

The wiring guide is only the cars basic wires, color & location, and has no info about a Factory Remote Start.  It is possible that as a Factory Remote Start it is normal for it to shut down when a door is opened.  Did you ask the dealer about it and if it was possible to change  that option?

I'm going to say it is truly a factory version, it is one button and separate from my key/remote lock.(no brand name) I haven't spoken with the dealer but at best, they will probably charge me an arm and leg to fix it. I was hoping I could at least trick the remote start and have all the incoming door pins set to one door. This way as long as one of the doors (or maybe the trunk) stayed closed, then my car wouldn't shutdown.

I believe the Subarus are factory pre-wired to allow the dealer an easy install by just plugging the R/S modules to connectors in the car.  Try looking on the net for the Subaru factory remote start kit and install guide.  The install guide might tell you if its a programmable option.

Bad news.  I found the install guide.  The system is supposed to shutdown when you open a door.  There are no user programmable options.  PM me if you want me to send you the Subaru Install Guide in pdf format.

Wow thanks Kreg357 you've been a great help! So I guess that leaves the dealer out. Do you have any thoughts on some hack fix to stop it from shutting down?

It seems like a solution is very simple, I just don't know how to go about doing it.

What I would do is find the brain of the remote start and test for the door pin input wire. Then use a normal closed relay wired to interupt the door pin input. I would wire it up as follows: pin 86 to +12v, pin 85 to ground with a toggle switch in line, cut the door pin wire and connect on side to 87a and the other to pin 30. This gives you the ability to keep the opening of the door from shutting down the remote start. If you would have to take your car to the dealer you can switch the relay off and it will function normally.

you wont be able to do the shutdown. the car has 4 independant door triggers, but the triggers themselves are through data from what i remember.

you can try probing the unit for wires that go ground when the door is open. if you do find that then using a relay, you can break the connection between the unit and doors, therefore it wont shut down on you.

I probed the different pins going into the remote start with a constant +12v.

2 pins are for the power window override so I can ignore those.

The other connector (four pins) is 12v-12v-12v-0v with the door open and 10v-10v-12v-0v with the door closed. It will stay that way until the dome light turns off and then the pins will change to 12v-12v-12v-0v. I tested the remote start when the two pins were at 10V (door closed) and it worked so I’m not sure if the 10v means anything.

Has anyone else tried this on a Subaru Legacy? If this is data that is causing the problem, what happens if I cut the data wire? Is there a way to test this without actually cutting the wire?

I got it! Thanks to everyone for their help, especially Kreg357.

I found the BIU and cut the driver side door wire. If you don't know, the BIU is located below the steering column and above the brake pedal. You can go here https://www.idatalink.com/helpdesk/ to search for the correct pin out.

Keep in mind that now my car thinks the door is closed all the time. So my alarm system no longer works for the driver side door. This is definitely something I was willing to sacrifice.

With the Subaru factory R/S, if you attempt to take over without the engine shutting off, it will set a code and the security light will stay on until you cycle the key off  and on again.  Gets confused if it sees two transponders at once. Doesn't seem to actually hurt anything though.

Don't ask me how much time I spent trying to figure out why the light kept staying on until I realized how it was supposed to work.

Great timing silent Bob. I saw that my light stayed on when I drove to work this morning. My alarm was in valet mode so I'm not sure if it would have gone off while driving, that would be bad.

I guess I'll have to deal with the light, which is a lot better then having the engine shut down when i open the door.

Silent Bob, or anyone. Do you know the pinout for the legacy remote start? I'm looking the pin that changes when R/S is running so I can hook up a relay for my door wire.

I found the correct R/S active wire. Where would be a good +12v constant line to hook the relay to that is close to the BIU?

dont draw power from the BIU, just grab it from the ignition harness, or close to the fusebox.

this car when i did the 3.3x was a PITA. there is little to no room under that dash.
